A family member is on immunosuppressant drugs for allergies at the moment, just started a 6 month course, not a great time, and not really getting much advice from our medical professionals as to the potential consequences should they fall foul of the virus
As @denislawsbackheel has said, they would fall in the high-risk group with me and many others, unfortunately. I am not sure of the severity of the allergies and whether stopping the course would make sense if the area where they live is confirmed to have infections (sometimes those types of courses can’t really be stopped once started without significant problems and I also recently met someone with such severe allergies that they get debilitating migraines without maintenance treatments). That is something their treatment specialist would really need to assess in the context of the potential risk at that time.

All you can do is take official guidance seriously, take reasonable precautions to avoid contraction/transmission, and look out for your family member’s general health and wellbeing.

Oh, and keep a sense of humour. ;-)

Yup, it's largely common sense I guess, disappointed so far as I said with the level of advice from the doctor, but 2 more appointments next week should hopefully bring a little clarity. Stopping the drugs is an option I think as the course has only just started, but there is a reluctance to do this as the wait to go on them has been quite long and drawn out, and the symptoms have been pretty bad for a few weeks (it seems to be cyclic)

We're both City fans from pre-take over, of course we have a sense of humour :)

A cruise ship has reportedly been denied entry to two countries and met with protests at a third, in the latest unrest to come during fears about the global coronavirus outbreak.

More than 2,000 Australians and New Zealanders were on the Sun Princess when it docked at Reunion Island in the Indian Ocean, the New Zealand Herald reports.

Protesters are said to have screamed abuse and hurled rocks at the first shuttle buses of passengers that arrived in Pointe des Gallets port on Sunday.

The demonstrations erupted despite there being no recorded coronavirus cases on board.

Protesters also threw rocks and bottles at police, according to the Imaz Press Reunion news agency on the island.

The news service added that officers responded by firing tear gas.

Rod Pascoe, a holidaymaker on the ship, told the New Zealand Herald: "Some passengers were very distressed and others (were) absolutely steaming, fuming when they got back.

This is getting out of hand now

hysterical over reactions like this are more dangerous than the virus :/

Pisses me off that some people down play it and are so ignorant to claim it won’t kill them even if they got it. I’ve got breathing problems so it will be worrying if the outbreak gets worst over here, which it obviously will do in the next few weeks.

yep, my dad has heart issues and my mum has COPD so they are at major risk.

Yes, that is what I indicated in the follow-up post where I point to the difference between the estimated overall mortality rate and the estimated mortality rates for various cohorts (e.g. no underlying health conditions, infected with certain health conditions, infected in certain age ranges, and so on) and why it is important not to mix them up (as it incorrectly diminishes the actual potential risk to the population at large).

And again, based on WHO and CDC guidance, it is a “best case” estimate and could be lower or higher than the actual rate, and also changes significantly based on region, healthcare access/quality, and a few other factors. It also could change if people chose not to take precautions to reduce/slow transmission, as initial estimates are based on relatively small and potentially inaccurate universes of data.

I'm starting to think you have shares in rentokill:-)

Getting the refugee treatment. Sad

I’ll say again, caring and taking action is not a binary state/action — you can care and act on this whilst also caring and acting to help to alleviate starvation, spread of other diseases, economic hardship/subjugation, and so on. It’s fine to remind people that there are other people in the world suffering, but one instance of suffering is not a valid reason to disparage interest or action related to other sources of potential suffering. Especially as what we do ourselves in this instance could reduce potential suffering elsewhere.

To the children starving thread robin.

It must be around here somewhere.

So got back from Florence last Thursday and felt fine. Had a tooth infection and had it out on Monday. Got a sore throat with the infection and mentioned it today to one of the office staff, (I'm a teacher), who mentioned it to the head. She went into a mad panic saying I need to go home and get tested and that everyone in the school needed testing and the school fumigated. Fuck me, over reaction or what? I called 111 and they said Florence was just about OK so not to worry and they wouldn't be testing me. Told the head it was out of the danger zone so she calmed down and saw sense. Just shows the panic this has caused. I understand it to a certain extent, but if you read the facts it's less likely to harm you than a common cold. I understand those who have medical problems having concerns though - especially breathing.

Shares up loads today. One of those stories when people think fuck me that was so obviously going to happen.

Bet Rees Mogg had a few quid in there.
Yes, it is fairly standard for a week following a market “correction” — see what happened the week after the fall in 2008. I’ve said elsewhere that my ethical stance stopped me from making much from it.

What will determine how things go over the mid- to long-term is the market trend over the coming months (the previous market fall did not really bottom out until March 2009).

Swine flu got me and my housemates at the time and that was horrible.

Apparently the coronavirus can't survive temperatures above 26c and it's supposed to be 27c here on Wednesday!

got links for that one please?

Edit. Singapore doesn’t get lower than 27’ at the moment but it’s there.

How many have you taken in?
Just saying Austraila long have turned away many a ship full of desperate people. Perhaps they’ll realize that people in desperate need are from all walks of life.

Sorry I’m just angry at the footage of kids being shot at by the costguard in Greece today. Just hate seeing babies drown in the ocean
