COVID-19 — Coronavirus

Phase 1 critical trial at Oxford Uni due to commence some time next week (awaiting clearance). They have recruited 500 people and I think they inject half with the real vaccine and half with a meningitis vaccine and then they will monitor how many of each group get naturally infected with Covid19. The vaccine development will be hampered by low rates in infection.

I don't really understand why they can't just infect them artificially but I guess that doesn't mimic the real world and might be unethical?

ANdrew marr show, Professor Sarah Gilbert, 9 am. BBC1. You can watch it of you're quick and rewind TV on the I player.

She did explain that one of the reasons why men and the old are more prone to infection and outcomes than young and women because of the ACE 2 receptor expression in cells in the respiratory tract i.e. easier for the virus to infect the old and men.

There are the goal keeping drills where the keeper is stood on the line facing into the goal and then turns round to having the ball booted at them. Maybe it’s more muscle memory they are trying to develop, I would say my reaction time in goal when I play 5 a side needs some work.
Stop facing your own net then, give yourself a fighting chance.

I am Claudio Bravo send me your bank details over so you can claim your £5.
No need. I have just this week been contacted by two Nigerian Princes and a benevolent lottery winner so I am sorted for the time being. Pin it to a bin or spend it on Vit D tablets. Thankyou for the kind offer though.

My daughter tells me the biggest help (pre vacine) would be to find a drug or drug combination that can turn off or dampen down the immune system to stop the Cytokine storm that results in the death of most people from this virus. Ironically the bat is one of the few animals that can do this naturally.

A paper on the subject:
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7102614/#s0010title

Incidently there is a NHS trial for Tocilizumab (TCZ) for use on limiting Cytokine storm, as well as the anti-malrial drugs Chloroquine, and Hydroxychloroquin.

Save me trawling through all the scientific papers that are being written can I ask all the experts on here when do they think the lockdown that everyone was asking for and then ignoring will end and when do they think a vaccine and some normality may happen. TIA

Nobody can say when a vaccine will be available. There has never been a disease like this so they are starting from scratch. The absolute, most optimistic case would be towards the end of this year. The most pessimistic is that they never make one (like the cold and AIDS).

I suspect they will ease the lockdown slightly in a couple of months and we will go into a cycle where it is eased then implemented. There is no time on the horizon where everything just goes back to normal.

Spain is gonna have another significant spike in cases and probably deaths. Basically the health system is now at a manageable level so they’re testing a lot more including outside hospitals in nursing homes etc. Expecting another tough week number wise here.

The article only says 'parts' to be fair. And it only really mentions Stockholm specifically, so they've got a long way to go. They also don't know if immunity is even possible yet. It best work as they've currently get ten times the deaths of Norway/Finland. Fingers crossed.
It’s interesting though as it shows that it has officially been their intention, whereas until now it’s just been guesswork. They only really need worry about Stockholm anyway.

Why do you think there will be a spike then? Due to relaxing lockdown on kids? Or just because of adding in nursing home figures?

No the kids still aren’t allowed out for another 8 days.

Because they’re now in a position to do a lot more testing so the cases are gonna spike, which they already have in the last few days. They’ve started to add a lot more outside hospital deaths too so think it’s gonna be a tough week.

America and Brazil have practically given up. More European country’s are easing restrictions - regardless of the death toll, it’s only a matter of time before before the world just gives up and goes ‘back to normal’
