Phase 1 critical trial at Oxford Uni due to commence some time next week (awaiting clearance). They have recruited 500 people and I think they inject half with the real vaccine and half with a meningitis vaccine and then they will monitor how many of each group get naturally infected with Covid19. The vaccine development will be hampered by low rates in infection.
I don't really understand why they can't just infect them artificially but I guess that doesn't mimic the real world and might be unethical?
ANdrew marr show, Professor Sarah Gilbert, 9 am. BBC1. You can watch it of you're quick and rewind TV on the I player.
She did explain that one of the reasons why men and the old are more prone to infection and outcomes than young and women because of the ACE 2 receptor expression in cells in the respiratory tract i.e. easier for the virus to infect the old and men.
