Unfortunately a selfish thick moron will always be a selfish thick moron whatever the crisis. A guy near me is out with his two kids everyday, kicking a football, riding on bikes, it's like an extended holiday for them. He has a decent sized front and back garden but oh no he has to be out and about. They might be the same family but anyone coming into contact with them isn't, increasing the risk for them and the family. Unless one of these idiot's get it they will never comply.
There's always the air rifle ;-)

I get the points you're trying to make @domalino, but if people are mortified over 400 deaths, then effectively telling them to get used it and saying 20,000 is a good goal isn't exactly going to make anyone feel better is it? Especially getting frustrated when clearly upset people don't enjoy hearing it. You seem a lovely, intelligent lad, but you're being a little tone 'death' here.

Hearing that tens of thousands of deaths, while spending several months away from loved ones, whilst all the time locked in a house, with less money than before, while suffering severe anxiety that they or their loved ones may pass, is actually quite a good goal, is not *ever* going to reassure the vast majority - even if it is logical. So maybe try to understand that.

What you're saying is right, technically, but people have a damn good reason to not want to hear that that is good right now. People want to hear actual good news (better treatments etc), not *only* tens of thousands may die! It's not fair of you to expect people to go 'okay, that's good then!' mate.
Stats people only see numbers
Try and relax a bit if you can,i know it is difficult, the numbers will get worse before they get better

Surely people aren’t surprised by these numbers? We’re being continually told that it’s going to get worse before it gets better unfortunately.

Without wanting to sound like a cold prick, under 20,000 deaths in a population of 66 million from a new global virus that no one has immunity to will be classed as a good outcome.

As long as the NHS doesn’t breach then I still think we’ll end up lower than Italy or Spain.

To put it into perspective
Burnley’s ground capacity is 21,000 so if you can imagine the ground being full and every one dying out of 60 odd million people who live in the uk it is still a very small number.
The chances of you dying at that satis-tic is very very slim if under 21,000 is achievable

The numbers In total are not what’s shocking it’s the jump in numbers
But it isn't that huge a jump from Saturdays 260 , and on Saturday we probably expected to be in the high 300s by today , it was the 2 day dip that was the anomaly. As has been said comparing day to day isn’t helpful. We should be expecting higher figures by the weekend. If as been said deaths take about 18 days we haven’t even got to last Mondays lockdown figures yet.

Steve, we've been hearing for weeks and weeks and nearly 2500 pages in this thread that 20,000 is going to be a good number. 390 is a scary number but the reality is that it's not unexpected if you've been following the news, so being surprised at it and angrily blaming the tories or China every 2 or 3 days when the deaths increase to another threshold number doesn't help anyone. 800 in a day will possibly come before the end of the week. It will definitely come at some point.

My comment was not to tell people to get over it, or to minimise the number, but to point out that this is all about frames of reference. A natural event has happened in this new virus popping up, and we're hoping to keep the deaths below 20,000 and in doing so we will be saving upwards of 480,000 people's lives. That's what all the anxiety and financial problems and missing loved ones is for.

Deep down very few are surprised, but that doesn't stop our heads exploding and feeling fucking sick and terrified by it. Most of us have been anxiously hoping what we're seeing in Spain and Italy won't happen here. It looks like it'll get pretty closed to it. Surprised or not, it doesn't make it any less sickening to try and digest, especially after the last couple of days looking semi-decent... a leap like that is a hammer blow. Even if expected.

It is dreadful, but these figures were predicted and will continue, and I find it surprising avid followers of this thread are as surprised as they seem. For me the important figure at the moment, and I know its only indicative, are the rates new cases grow, if we can slow that and keep the peak down the death rates will follow by them selves.

was about to write similar- tragic as it is - we all know the numbers are going to spike massively in the next 2/3 weeks. It’s out of hour hands now.

We just have to hope our isolation method will show a downturn after that.
