COVID-19 — Coronavirus

I thought it was spread from clusters in Kent to London due to work. It seems unlikely that the student population has much to do with this as most unis were working online and most students have gone home anyway. The student population density in London is low. Schools might indeed be an issue but from what I understood the age groups with the highest covid rates were young adults.

Student population density in London is low? Seriously?! Have you not seen how many universities in London, regardless of population. Not to mention the teaching hospital trusts. It is also worth noting that I was talking about cases in absolute terms.

As for the age groups, it was school age, early 20s and those between mid 30s and 50s.

The area in the capital where the new variant was mainly concentrated was in East London. This was spreading around the schools in the area.

Also London had several weeks in T2 with the mutant more easily transmitted strain before it had been identified so all those students and kids, all population density was becoming a breeding ground with it being known - it had yet to spread North

Several weeks in Tier 2 with the new variant? What dates are you talking about?

I suspect it might have been as high in March/April but we were not testing anywhere near as many people then.

Trafford had a better day today. Stockport though is going out of control.

For similar reasons I suspect - Christmas shopping.

Goodness knows where both would be if they had been put in tier 2 a month back when numbers supported that.

This is in action why tiers do not work.
Nobody with any sense would go shopping in Stockport centre!! So I assume Stopfordians have been shopping in Manchester and the Trafford centre like everyone else. More likely they have been continuing to have a social life by visiting tier 2 which will have pushed cases up.

By the way if we get 272 cases (ha!) tomorrow England will clock up two million positive tests.

That's about one in 28 of the population.

And just the ones who have been tested.

Stockport is a very popular shopping centre at Christmas. Or was as I have not been near there since last Christmas!

Plenty of people from some of the worst impacted areas in south Manchester (Levenshulme, Gorton etc) go there instead of Manchester.

Both my brother and I likely had it then but the NHS told us we would only be tested if ill enough to go to hospital. I bet many were told the same.

You can only lock down if the same rules apply everywhere.

Looking at the Dulux colour charts you mentioned the other day, you can see how most of the cases in the first wave were the elderly, so as you say the testing being done on those ill enough to go to hospital. The subsequent waves show what the true pattern of spread is but the first wave was under-reported for obvious reasons.

Today has seen the highest infection rate since the pandemic began. Everybody who went to the Trafford centre today should be ashamed. It’s not necessary to go and people need to get a grip. Pathetic the lot of them.
Not to mention whoever set the rules that allowed the Trafford Centre to open.

Mainly we had no testing facility I was told by the NHS at the time. Though that was early on - mid March.

I locked myself down because of it about 10 days before it happened nationwide as I knew if I was not getting a test the chances were neither were plenty who were younger and had even fewer symptoms. Always glad I did that as if I did not have it then I likely would have caught it over those 10 days.

Too many closed shops, too many Poundlands, awful parking. I live in Stockport, but can be in Manchester in 12 minutes on the train. Debenhams shutting will be the final straw. But each to their own.

the Mersey way shopping centre is a dump. The other area (where toys r us was) with curry’s and boots is pretty popular though. As mentioned previously, lots of people from areas in Manchester go there.

they need to sort the market area out as that part is actually really nice. Lots of good pubs as well.

slightly off topic though ..
