COVID-19 — Coronavirus

Boris Johnson just said that he wants to move to every person in the UK taking a test every morning to see if they have Covid or not. At same time Matt Hancock says too many people are asking to have a test when they have no symptoms.

I heard that. This aspirational stuff is all well and good (albeit pie in the sky), but the current state is not working and they should be fixing that first.

Boris also said we now can do 320,000 tests a day.

According to Gov UK the capacity is 369, 937,

But the last date they have published data for tests is 2 Sep and that day they did 175, 687 - which 33,000 LESS than the week before.

He regularly seems to state random numbers which sound good.

It may be that they have the capacity to do it, but they just don't actually have the test kits, or the infrastructure/staff to conduct and collect them. It's simply deceit.

The new rules (starting Monday) will allow an escalating ability to break up gatherings of more than 6 with an instant £100 fine doubling for every reoffence. Up to £3200. By which point any idiot still doing it will presumably either be in a cell or hospital.

This weekend may see a lot of over 6 gatherings because of announcing this is coming in days ahead.

How can you give 2 hours notice of lockdown in Greater Manchester when people need to prepare and days notice to go forth and party until Monday?

Sometimes I think we are living in an extended episode of Yes Minister.
Who is going to police it, especially indoors.

Said exactly the same to Mrs Moon....it's like a pass to be a dick for the weekend.

My brother in law tried to book a covid test yesterday in Preston for his son and was told the only ones available that day were in Burnley and Walsall. It seems there is a real increased demand for testing we jsut arent currently set up to deal with.

Starmer pointed this out in PMQs - Johnson decided to claim that Starmer was criticising the NHS, which is of course utter Hancocks and he knows it.

They keep talking about a massive expansion and over 320000 tests a day. Seems like they’ve done over 200000 ONCE and yet they’re saying there’s no capacity.
Since they outsourced it to the highly trained and experienced test and tracing companies Serco and G4S it’s been going backwards, surprisingly enough.
Whilst the military were involved it was increasing its capacity weak after week and I’ve no idea why they gave it to the charlatan outsourcing companies.

Nicola Sturgeon was scathing of the testing capacity this morning. Said in England people are being sent within a target of 'just' 75 miles of home (some have been much further - one was told to get a ferry to Ireland!).

But that even 75 miles is unacceptably far for her.
