COVID-19 — Coronavirus

My 87 year father in law, in hospital after having a heart attack, was sent home without warning, as 3 patients on his ward developed Covid. Told to self isolate and that he was safer at home. No care package or follow up appointment.
Shocking. And they wonder why people have no faith in the way this pandemic has been handled

These stats are just getting silly when you have 2 studies and one says 26k a day and the other 76k then the only conclusion is the studies are shit and they don’t know.

It’s not like they are ballpark figures 50k is a pretty big disagreement.
Rubbish in. Rubbish out.

They are actually measuring slightly different things and doing it in very different ways.
The Zoe study because of risk of bias of who gets the app etc is probably poor at estimating numbers but good at quickly picking up changes in trends.
Take the absolute number with a big pinch of salt. The ONS is probably a better estimate of numbers of when it took place but is slower at picking up changes in rate of infection because it is historical in nature.
I didn't hear Whitty but from the comments above I suspect the high number was an estimate of the upper end of the confidence interval rather than the midpoint estimation.

My niece runs an NHS Trust in Manchester. I've just spoken to her and she's furious with Burnham. Said most NW hosptals are at near capacity due to Covid patients taking up the beds. She said if your mum were to have a heart attack or stroke tonight, she would die while they tried to find a bed for her.
Maybe be it’s time Manchester NHS leaders (who are working their socks off) speak out against the people who are ignoring the rules and are putting other people’s safety in jeopardy. I think people are past the point of listening to politicians and maybe the worst offenders wouldn’t listen to health leaders either, but it could put pressure on other agencies to enforce the rules.

(FWIW, My Mum was in the MRI after having a heart attack a few weeks ago and may need to go back in for another operation).

For us plebs listening you hear 26k a day and 76k a day shrug and move on. One problem with scientists is they don’t know their audience.

They have different measurement systems so if they don't like the results of one they can spin the others to suit their own agendas. Don't trust the bastards to tell us the truth. Getting numbers and telling us the exact figured should not be beyond the realms of possibility

Better than most other countries who still aren't there after 7 months then.

I am all for knocking the government when they fuck up, but not just knocking them for giggles. The truth is from a very poor start, we got our act together rather better than pretty much everyone else:
