The actual people writing in the Spectator are Prof Heneghan & Tom Jefferson of the Centre for Evidence based Medicine in Oxford. I actually do worry about their objectivity as Evidence based medicine advocates over Covid . A better summary of the study is that the evidence remains inconclusive as the actual event rate was low which is whatpretty much any objective reading of that study would say. I have to say the CEBM appear to me to have acted as advocates rather than disspassionate observers of science throughout this.

PS The prime purpose of mask wearing was always stated as source control which is not addressed by this study.

Heneghan generally has been remarkably wrong throughout.

Epi's and disease control specialists will disagree and have in fact all over the world on best practice and the nature of the virus.

i think protect the elderly and keep the virus out of nursing homes and socially distance and practice good health protocols is the best way to suppress transmission.

Lockdowns especially harsh ones that last more than 14 days are dangerous to the health and well being of the community at large and this has been known for centuries.

Being a Stat's man from my UNI days I and having some knowledge of Poissson Processes ( skewed to allow for non random transmission ) I would suggest at least 400 mill have contracted the disease to date ( allowing for poor recording in many countries including China which is as Dodgy as they come for political reasons ) and 4 million have died with or from the virus to date.

So high transmission spread with a higher than usual number of super spreaders than other Corona Virus's but fortunately for the human race not that lethal.

My estimate on the numbers of actual cases might be significantly lower than the true number because this virus might have a much higher Asymptomatic number than most if not all Covid's in the past few centuries.

That may or may not be true but what has it to do with a mask study?

Look he shouldn't be too concerned our Chief Climate Scientist ( in reality a Public Servant in disguise ) said Australia would have now snowfall by 2015 back in 1990 and our dams would be empty due to the green house effect as it was known back then.

he also said our fires would burn more acreage each year and our summers longer and hotter and our winters shorter and warmer when it was called Climate Warming.

Now that it is called Climate Change he predicts that unless we have all our energy generated by renewables , transportation and agriculture at net zero by 2030 the world will end by 2080 as far as human habitation is concerned.

My solution is to give him a gun so that he personally can kill all the Cows and Sheep in Australia on his own but before he does that to point in the other direction and fire just one bullet and see what it hits.

They often ask Epi's to tell the politicians whether mask's matter.

Here in oz however we rely on Health Ministers whose main claim to fame is that have a doctorate in Union Matters.

I never thought the Strawbs were alive and well and living in Australia in 2020.

False negatives or false positives ?
Two of my daughters colleagues recently tested positive. One was absolutely mortified because of her own health issues and the fact she'd brought it into the workplace.
Both had no symptoms. All other members of staff tested negative. With this in mind but still anxious as fuck they book a second test. They travel, are tested negative. Happy days. Winner, winner. Chicken dinner. Back to work you'd think.
A few days later they're contacted (by track and trace) and bollocked for not sticking with the first result. Apparently false positives don't exist and they must complete 14 days self isolating.
Strangely enough the caller had no answer when challenged about the same applying to false negatives.
Both are now set for the antibody test.
Who's your money on?

I quite agree with you because to put it bluntly given where we are with both the current wave and the vaccines anyone taking a significant risk, which if they all go having family get togethers and going on piss ups they will be doing all because its bloody Xmas then you have to hope they suffer any consequences rather than so elderly or vulnerable person.

This whole fuss about Xmas is absolutely shocking this year, a clear illustration of how absolutely brain dead swathes of the population are. Its one fucking year and lives are at steak.
