I think the unfortunate reality is that most businesses cannot just let everyone work from home, and neither can the government tell them to shut up shop. The country would grind to a halt and cease to function. People would starve to death.

So whilst much of the UK is forced to carry on as normal, it is IMO therefore unavoidable that this is going to spread exponentially with the end result that most people in the UK are going to catch it. The only hope is that with the hand-washing, extra vigilance, people working from home where they can, going out less etc, we can slow down the inevitable.

At the moment there is no justification for any company to make sudden changes. There are only 3-5 cases I think in Lancashire where I am and those people brought it in from Italy. There is no evidence of any spread between the population... Yet.

Preparation is the most important thing at this stage and it'll save companies money now if they can for example get the laptops and things needed to allow people to work from home in say 3 months time.

This virus is going to be regionalised and that is where companies need to be ready. If the virus starts to spread in a region then that is when decisions need to be made quickly about home working etc.

If I was Boris I'd be setting up regional teams to monitor the spread of the virus who also have the power to shutdown schools, roads, towns, airports etc.

The central government 'it's all okay because only a 1000 are dead somewhere else' approach will not work.

The expat community in my part of Spain are all of the opinion that this is nothing and just scaremongering. As they are mostly older and therefore more vulnerable I’ve decided to put off my travel plans I had for this month, stock up on drugs and alcohol and self isolate for the month.
Fortunately the weather has been lovely for this time of year so with a bit of luck the only thing I’ll be suffering from will be a burnt nose.
Stay safe blues.

One of Dr campbells videos over the weekend ( maybe friday ) stated at least 30 cases in UK ( was approx 15% of known cases at the time ) are community spread, and apparently 60% community spread in Korea.

Simply untrue. Karen on this very forum picked it up in the UK, so it is already spreading between our population. But it's a moot point. By Wednesday 400 or 500 hundred people in the UK will have it, and by the weekend, 1,000. Spreading across the UK is happening as we speak.

My company sent an email around on Friday advising people they can work from home if they 'do not feel safe commuting in' etc. However, what winds me up is the fact that it is still worded in such a way that puts the onus back on the individual..... the old 'presenteeism' bullshit. Just say everyone is advised to work from home for the next few weeks and be done with it.

I've not been on here much over the weekend. Was Karen confirmed? bugger.

My boss has asked me ( and everyone who uses public transport ) to work from home, I get 6 trains a day.

its not all altruism on his part, if 2/3 members of my team go out for a few weeks then its a massive hit to the company.

3 months time?! We will all have it if we carry on as normal for the next 3 months.

The Chief Medical Officer has some big decisions to make. There could be blood on his hands if he gets it wrong
He's an experienced medical professional who will make a judgment based on all the evidence available to him and offer his advice to the government. You can't apportion blame to him or any individual for what happens subsequently, this is a totally unprecedented situation.

I quite like that bloke. He strikes me as sensible, level headed, honest, factual and not interested in playing politics. I only hope the politicians are listening to him.

I think it seems to be "OK" - although the worst affected area is where I am supposed to be going. There's circa 1,000 cases in Germany right now, so probably 10,000 by middle of next week.

But it's the getting there that concerns me. Putting aside the possibility that I might spread the infection myself - no-one is immune and who knows I might pick it up before I go (and not know it when I travel) - then there's the risk of picking it up at the airport or very specifically, on the plane.
EDIT: 1st death in Germany reported this morning. Some spokesperson saying "we've been sleepwalking over this" and "we will be like Italy in 2 to 3 weeks".
