Just heard that 50% of cases in Italy have needed hospital treatment and 10% needing intensive care. Just think on those numbers for 1 moment.

People who could be saved are dying because if lack of ICU capacity, and (a) this has barely begun and (b) they have more facilities per capita than we do.

This is EASILY the biggest crisis this country has faced since WW2 and the fact some people cannot grasp or are in denial about this, is as dangerous as it is infuriating.

I'd be delighted if somehow only 1m of the 66.4m UK pop catch this. Entirely manageable while admittedly scary and sad if it leads to 50-100k deaths. It does however preclude the societal breakdown we need to ensure the PL trophy remains at the etihad :-(
Perhaps not society completely, but if only 1 million people contract the virus, and the estimated severe case rate holds at 20%, as we continue to take very little action to stretch the occurrence of the condition out over more time, that is still enough to overwhelm our current healthcare capacity and cause all sorts of problems, including a rise in mortality rates for COVID-19 and many other life-threatening conditions (as a bottleneck on resources has a substantial knock on effect, especially given our system is already being strained by the annual increased treatment volume from cold and flu season). That’s of course not even factoring in the number of people seeking treatment even though they are not infected with the novel coronavirus, which would further clog the system.

Let’s hope not even that many become infected. Though, I am not overly optimistic.

Sorry to be the harbinger of doom once again but I would say there is absolutely zero chance of only 1m infections. The government is talking about 6m people being off sick at once, let alone in total.

50% needing hospital treatment is a crazy number.
Don't understand what government is waiting for, italy not messing about, we seem to be delaying for some reason

I agree with you, mate — that’s why I said I am not overly optimistic.

I said we can hope.

As I have said many times on here, we should plan for the worst, hope for the best, and expect somewhere in between.

I don’t think any regular to this thread would accuse me of underestimating/downplaying the risk.

American sport starting to take it more seriously, although you'd expect empty stadiums if they're doing this.

Meanwhile on a statue of Savonarola in Ferrara...

The sign is written in a kind of ancient Italian since it's a statue of a famous doom&gloom Middle-Ages preacher who was burnt as heretic because he opposed various noble families. It reads:

Damned sinners,
stubborn as mules,
if of your duties
chancellors and mayors relieve you,
do not think 'tis for the purpose
of wandering 'round as untores*;
the coronarious wyrm
makes attempts on your arses.

Anyone coming back from italy now has to self isolate for 14 days UK,do not travel there from here

463 dead in italy

The orange gimp is finally sounding interested, his base will be hit so he won't get their votes if they kick it

Put this in another forum, but gives you an idea of whats going on in Italy.

Thank God got my daughter home from Siena, Italy on Saturday evening. 60 people at most in her flight. We should be over there now celebrating her 21st birthday today but cancelled the flights Saturday morning. So glad we did. She's not got any symptoms but personnally isolating herself. Extraordinary measures for extraordinary times!

Funnily enough, while she was there, no panic buying, no hoarding toilet rolls, but cancelled all sport including Seria A and now the whole country in lock down. easyjet still selling flights and didnt refund us our flight costs or offer a voucher for future flights. Profiteering, money grabbing, poor PR and customer service.
