COVID-19 — Coronavirus

The virus is in retreat in Europe and the USA. Let us hope for good. I look forward to some entertainment from Mr Domestos along the way.

It would be like a branch of the Territorial Army. Regular practice and work furloughs paid for by the state.

We used to have one but it was disbanded in the late 1960s. I've advocated on here before that a similar service should be reintroduced, particularly for mobilisation during emergency events (flooding/airport closures etc.), as we have a tendency to float between British muddling through and pulling together or at the other extreme deploying the military. How it could be funded is the trickier question.

Indeed it is. But South Korea did it.
We need such teams as Civil defence for the next virus to "escape" from China.
I've got my Dad's ARP helmet if that helps. I did donate his heroin tablets to the local museum (for injecting victims of shock).

What do all 16,250 of them do for the rest of the time? One could go through two careers back to back and not be needed.
They can go back to pushing through a hard Brexit.

There are 35,000 army reservists.

We've got 600,000 volunteers for the NHS, mostly doing nothing.

has there been any good articles recently discussing why the case rate in the UK has stubbornly stuck at 4.5k since 1st April?

The press bulshit mantra
5 weeks ago: Lock down, lock down, lock down.
Now: Open up, open up, open up, upon up.
A few weeks time if we do open up: Too soon, we weren't ready!
A few weeks time when we do start to open up: you waited to long! We could have opened up sooner.

What a bunch eh? What is the collective noun for idiots?
EDIT:
I looked it up and apparantly it's a Thicket, though I think a Village would be more appropriate.

Out of interest , what press are insisting we open up the lockdown ?

all i can see if them reporting public mood and what the opposition government is saying

Surely given what Boris is saying here, asking people to remain patient - the whole rush of football restarting is nonsense?
The Football restarting bollocks is a public version of the lobbying that normally takes place in the shadows.
Basically talk about it enough and hope it happens like the money is the overriding factor in everything
There’s far bigger financial issues than football like tourism restaurants airlines etc
Also if the pfa wish to they can create a big shitstorm out of the pressure for their members to put themselves at risk

A bit like football, they are selling clicks and follow their biggest area of potential success.
Nothing sacred with them.

They are insisting on “the plan”
Give a plan and dates etc and the dick heads will go back to normal now
Thing is labour etc know this but are trying to make our we haven’t got a plan

It makes me wonder if schools and higher education could be involved.
Well you would need to have a tidge of intelligence. Even if you are following the advice of a "Big Data" analytic application that consumes NHS app data and mobile phone GPS positioning data.
Calling those who have left quarantine or to check people are staying in quarantine is however a job i would not want. Some would enjoy it though.

I'd imagine there will be a certain amount of water carrying involved at the lower end of the scale. Just a thought.

It's a cop out to just say people would go back to normal.

If the government said the plan was to put a robust testing and tracing infrastructure in place and explained what the benefits were going to be of that, gave an honest time frame and explained why it's important we stay strong and wait, then you could argue people would be more inclined to stick to lockdown for the time being. It's the lack of any idea on time frames that is leading people to take matters into their own hands

It's not about which is the bigger issue though is it. If an industry can do something to get it moving again why shouldn't it? It's unfair to say that sport can't adapt to keep going just because airlines can't. If there is a safe way then of course sport should resume.

Do you not think that no-one really knows si we are waiting to see what happens in other countries that are coming out of lockdown first? Seems that way to me.

The furlough scheme has been extended until the end on June, think that gives us an indication.
