COVID-19 — Coronavirus

The fast turnaround seems incredible, possibly having some of the 30m vaccines ordered by the UK delivered this month to next.

I'm cautious though, long term effects always a worry and plenty of production and distribution hoops to jump through still. May need fast tracking through the ports too after first January and we guard against activities which could compromise delivery. Hopefully even Isis wouldn't target vaccines but you never know, they'd probably get a pretty penny for them.

I just hope we have a pre prepared list of people and functions who should be offered this first. Teachers, NHS, higher risk.

Everything closed for 3-4 weeks, everything. No mixing, no socialising, no shopping, food delivered by army and people tested before doing what is deemed necessary. Building sites, shut. Factories shut. No one in or out of the country.
Get this virus out of the country once and for all, anyone entering after the 4 weeks is rigorously tested and isolated until clear, or just let it run it’s course.. no half arsed measures which really are having little affect.

That’s my opinion.
Totally agree on this approach, but the reality is it would be too difficult to adhere to by some or police.

The evidence from here in Wales is that if Labour was in charge nationally there wouldn't be much difference. Our lockdown (which ended today) doesn't look that much different from the one that has just started in England.
It has been a total failure in South Wales.

Sturgeon explained when she put them in that she felt there needed to be a tier more and less restrictive than the tiers put into place in England. But she did not want to confuse people by having the same number in different countries meaning different things so introduced a zero and a four.
There is no intention of having them as permanent measures.
Measures have to be time limited or we are walking into a dystopian nightmare.

It is very good news on the vaccine but it will not be easy for this to be used in mass vaccination programmes because it requires two doses and storage at -70C - limiting how and where it can be administered.

Hopefully some of the other vaccines will work as well given this has proven the theory. As some of those will be much more able to administer and control the virus globally - which, of course, we have to do. Not just get rid of it in rich western nations. Or Covid will never be close to being eradicated as a threat.

Starmer on LBC this morning, stated that Labour in power would look like Wales. Well that is something to look forward to then :)

Indeed whenever I have been to Wales it usually means massive traffic jams, constant pissing down, full of cunts many of whom are scousers......Keir certainly knows how to sell a vision and harvest votes.

Details of the age distribution of the 3909 cases in N Ireland up to yesterday.

0 -19 = 445

20 - 39 = 1325

40 - 59 = 1206

60 - 79 = 603

80 + = 330

not far short of a quarter over 60 is still a bit of a worry and the over 80 percentage has risen again.

The numbers of school and university age cases is falling quite a lot which may be why onward transmission has reduced too.

Still 'only' 126 care homes in NI with at least one Covid case. They have stabilised that number for several days now. This will hopefully start to bring the death numbers down in due course.

Default storage conditions, expect to see a change before or just after launch. Almost anywhere that would be storing the doses would have facilities to store the doses at those conditions. Storage conditions are typically -70/80°C (specialist freezer), -20°C (home freezer type), 2-8°C (fridge temperatures - think insulin) or 20°C (room temperature - easy storage for most of the world / at home for patients). Stressed conditions usually stop about 40°C and high humidity (80%+).

Now that efficacy is proven, there will be a shift to scale-up and stability studies. The latter of which will undoubtedly be running in parallel to the clinical trials and actually we wouldn't expect to hear anything before at least the 6-month time point as that's the typical length of what's called an accelerated stability study (stressed temperature, humidity and storage (i.e. storing the vials upside down etc.)). I don't know when the product was manufactured and thus the stability study would have been initiated to determine when 6 months is.

Other option is that they haven't pursued stability studies in order to focus on winning the race, so to speak, however that would be an incredibly...novel... approach. If this is the case then this becomes the vaccine of the first world only, at least initially.
