Papers tomorrow looking good for the vaccine

Times interview with AZ ceo saying new data showing it a lot more effective, up there with Pfizer and Moderna and expected to be approved in days

Telegraph saying total vacinations to be above 2 millionwithin fortnight, oxford jabs going to start week commencing 4th Jan then really ramp up the week after with mass vaccination centres

Mail saying the Gov has identified 15 million to vaccinate to prevent most hospitalisations and deaths and are aiming to have them done by end of Feb, which means tight restrictions could be lifted

mirror however is complaining about most Care Homes not being rolled out so far
Those stories fit closely with what I have posted a few times over the past couple of weeks about a late night interview I saw from one of the Oxford scientists talking about the reason for the delay in approval - that extra tests were showing even greater efficacy and they felt they needed to trade off that assurance that it was as good as the one in use now so it did not look like some were being given the second best option because it was easier.

It also fits with what my friend of 50 years was told 2 weeks ago that despite being one of the most vulnerable she had to wait for the Oxford vaccine because it was too difficult to get her and the current one in the same place. But the Oxford one was coming and they already had all the plans ready for its expected approval tomorrow or Tuesday and vaccinations to start a week tomorrow. With she being told it was likely she would be asked to go to the Etihad complex which she lives near for this a week on Tuesday.

This is all very good news. Once the over 75s are vaccinated the death numbers will hopefully plummet a few weeks later.

But January and February whilst we get to that point given the weeks needed to do so and lag between getting sick and dying are still going to be hard that is almost certain.

We might well see light by early March.

Meantime we have to brace ourselves as this is not over.

Wales data today is terrifying. A lot of Christmas catch up will be included though.

Indeed they just clarified the data comes from 48 hours up to early yesterday.

70 deaths (highest yet since Spring)

4142 cases - a new record for Wales and indeed a month ago would have been for Wales, Scotland and N Ireland added together. But divided by two - whilst still high per day- is not as high as it was before they went into lockdown.

The 4142 cases were from 36, 994 tests carried out between 9 am Christmas Eve and 9 am Boxing Day.

So if I add up correctly the last 4 days in Wales over Christmas were 105 deaths and 6379 cases.

Which is certainly not good even over 4 days.

But less bad when seen in context.

For comparison week to week Wales last Sunday - data for ONE day only not two, of course - was 69 deaths and 2239 cases.

Btw for the poster asking to see the Kent data daily that I post and worrying over the 900/1000 + pop scores there.

Or indeed those in GM worried about the Pop Scores of most GM boroughs - even good ones like Trafford - now having climbed over 200.

Neither Dartford nor Medway are in the top 10 worst Pop scores at the moment. And everywhere in GM is well down the list.

Top is Brentwood at a Pop score of1410. With Epping Forest at 1316 and Thurrock at 1284.

As you see Essex and Eastern England are the main epicentres.

give it a rest with the fucking lockdowns. If you want a vaccination programme in January, tell those people to shield for the month. People have jobs to do.

from what I remember of lockdowns

you can work from home but if you can’t work from home you can go to work.
Retail and hospitality a bit of an issue there, but I think most would accept a "final lockdown" for a month if there was a clearer end in sight.

Not much change for the majority of the country between lockdown and now, just the gyms from my point of view, but January is a pain in the arse for that anyway.

exactly , given I live in Manchester have been effectively locked down for pretty much all of the last year bar a couple of months.

at the review there is only one thing going to happen to Manchester if it moves tiers and that’s upwards.

it’s amazing isn’t you can’t go to a covid secure restaurant for all year but you can queue up outside the Trafford centre and go and scrap for “bargains” and that’s entirely safe.

fucking nonsense.

Liverpool increasing all the time but still in Tier 2, what's the probability of litigation against the Government for not placing them on lockdown when actual deaths occur?

I think there is widespread public support for further lockdowns in January and February provided the vaccine is rolled out fast
That's the key Oxford.....it seems like it's been a couple of days away for a long time, I understand fully it needs to be checked and right & maybe the 'few days away' is the media being the usual wankers but there needs to be a proper announcement on the state of play, too many people are banking on this and dangling a carrot isn't good for the vulnerable's mental heath.

yep got a lot of Essex friends. They or family members testing positive everywhere.

England hospital deaths down on last Sunday but I would not be too confident that means much given the date.

Always lower reporting on a Sunday of course.

231 deaths - down from 266 last Sunday. 29 in the NW v 44 last wk. Also likely impacted by under reporting.
