According to the Telegraph just now leaks suggest much of the north and midlands will go into tier 4 this week.

To be announced tomorrow.

Why wait?

It has to be all or nothing. So it has to be all not leaving a few little islands outside waiting to be invaded by mad at being in tier 4 rule breakers.

But rumours say only two thirds of England will be in tier 4 not a full lockdown. So yet again they are putting ideology ahead of science.

Happily some scientists are trying to convince them otherwise as they foresee an NHS catastrophe without lockdown.

schools are currently closed anyway so there’s no difference between tier 4 and a full lockdown is there?

maybe outdoor sports

Does anyone know what the current situation is in Israel, per chance? I hear they're pretty rapid in terms of vaccine roll out, is it having any impact on their cases or too early for that yet in terms of numbers?

Think they are hoping to have 25% of population vaccinated (both doses) by end of January. Looking at 150k vaccines daily in the next week so circa 1m per week.

The European vaccine regulator has said they do not expect to be able to allow the Oxford vaccine to be used there before February at the earliest now as the data requested for consideration has not been sent and no application yet made.

This would not impact UK allowing it but it seems a little worrying they have not taken this step in Europe yet.

We have people on here who seem to be in the loop on this and have tipped off news before.

Is there anything to be concerned about here as if they really are geared up to start using it less than a week away as we are being told a delay in announcement seems odd.

Unless, of course, Boris wants it as sugar with his Tier 4 for the north press conference tomorrow.

Some media sources now claiming leaks that instead of Tier 4 it will be a tweaked and tighter 'Tier 5'. As scientists are expressing growing doubts tier 4 is enough to slow the spread of this new Super strain.

Anything not to be called a lockdown it seems.

That's a really impressive rate.

Be interesting to see how it affects the figures over there as they may well be the benchmark.

We'll, the inevitable has happened.

My mother was admitted to hospital a week ago with heart failure and chest infection. Today, following her third and final covid test she has now tested positive.

I'm absolutely gutted. I've shielded her since March and she's now contracted the bloody thing in the place that's meant to make her better.

This is not a rant at the NHS, merely a rant at the bloody virus.

Sorry to hear that. All the very best to your mum.

Any update on the Oxford approval? Thought it was meant to be yesterday or today?

Not seen anything. My guess was today. FT yesterday said could be today. I'm guessing we'd know by now if so. My next guess is tomorrow, but you can see how accurate I've been so far, so don't depend on it!

England hospital deaths down on last week but the Bank Holiday likely has partly delayed the usual Tuesday catch up to Wednesday We will see more tomorrow I fear.

365 with 40 from the NW. But that will be low partly due to the usual NW weekend limited registration still applying yesterday. This is down from 405 last Tuesday.

The uk regulator is genuinely independent of govt, so they won't give a toss about Boris' timing.

Soriot was interviewed the other day; he'd know if there were concerns (the company gets formal questions from the regulator as part of the process) and would not have been so bullish if significant challenges are coming back.

Interestingly, the EMA said they lacked quality information. That means data on the manufacturing process, site(s), analytical techniques etc. First time that's been raised anywhere on this, so a bit odd.

4 elderly members of my church have gone into hospital since August for minor things and contracted and died of Covid whilst in there. My father in law was on a ward in September where 4 patients on the ward tested positive. He was sent home saying it was safer at home. It’s shocking.

England hospital deaths 3 wks v 2 wks v last wk v TODAY: Total / NW Total / NW % of England Total

325 / 72 NW / 22%

293 / 55 NW / 19%

405 / 64 NW / 16%

365 / 40 NW / 11% TODAY

That all looks like good news especially for the NW. But I would be cautious because of the likelihood of a Christmas data hangover likely being more apparent and longer lasting even than it usually is,

So how can the government make any decisions on tiers tomorrow if all the data is out of date/delayed?

Tier 4 ! I can still order , pay and collect from my local argos. But I had to return the item as it didnt work, cant do that you need to go 10 miles up the road to sainsbury's. "Why ? " " we are in tier 4 and cant open our tills". " But that town is in tier 4 as well !". " yes but its inside sainsbury's so it's open as normal !!'.

So Argos in tier 4 as a stand alone shop cant open but an Argos inside a supermarket can.

So today I queued for over an hour outside just t be told I had to go 10 miles up the road to sainsbury's to get a refund.
It wouldnt have hurt argos to put a notice up informing the customers. I mentioned this to the staff at argos in sainsbury's and she said " lots of people are asking why theres no sign"
Effective communication is something a lot of organisations are bad at.
I once had a rant at a nurse at a hospital I was visiting for an appointment. Not something I normally do, but I was stressed to the limit by anticipation of possible bad news. She spotted me going further down a corridor than I should have, whilst searching for the unit I'd been directed to. She spoke to me as if I was a naughty child and I just blew.
"Get a bloody sign up then...how the hell was I suppose to know??"
To be fair she looked apologetic and it wasn't her fault (although she shouldn't have acted like a headteacher either), but good communication is priceless and prevents tons of frustration and anger from those using the service.
