Covid and travel discussion

Yes spend your hard earned cash on a trip to Blackpool, lovely hotel with mushrooms growing in the communal bog, a lively little bed and breakfast with a knocking shop next door and DWP scallies on the other side, pissed stained matress and fungai in the shower at no extra cost
You've sold it to me..does the place still stink of shit

Sooner or later they have to take the handbrake off and accept some risk.
Otherwise we may aswell accept permanent restrictions for years
Agreed. Just leave the handbrake on until Europe and the rest of the world catch up. Fancy a trip to Brazil or Poland at the moment?

As we emerge from the differing stages of lock-down we shall have to reevaluate risk at a personal level. As we travel beyond local areas or enter pubs and beer gardens it will encompass risk. If the guidelines allow, then each and every one of us will have to take stock of our own aversion to risk. Many will rush out, some will tentatively dip toes whilst some won't even bother. It's down to choice.

I think the UK staycation/domestic holiday market is gonna get a massive boost this summer by default anyway, I don't think that particular area needs any encouragement.

So many are still not going to entertain the idea of international travel until at least 2022, such is their right to do so, and that should see plenty of cash being splashed about in the UK holiday sector.

I think what some people fail to see (not you, just generally) is that international tourism supports hundreds of thousands of jobs, directly or indirectly, in the UK.

Everything from high street agents, tour operators, airlines, foreign exchange....right through to the person patting you down at security in the airport; these people's livelihoods are reliant on the return of travel.

The government have, so far, shown no inclination to support the industry beyond the benefits that all sectors can claim.

I see alot of people wanting international travel essentially outlawed for the rest of the year, but I don't see the same people showing any concern for the jobs that would cost, not so much as even a passing comment on how the industry would survive if it was shelved for 2021.

People just lazily saying 'ban travel until 2022 when it can return', it really isn't as straightforward as that unless the government intervenes and props us up. As already stated they haven't offered us anything in a year of turmoil and it seems we're not even on their agenda at all.
Really?

My problem is uk sites are going to increase the price, I love UK but you can't guarantee the weather, so I go abroad

Really?

I think that figure is generally disputed, though airlines have indeed had some assistance during this pandemic. All gotta be paid back bar furlough though.

Working from a bricks and mortar agency, we've had nothing additional.
And whilst we've had nothing additional, we've also had to refund, and continue to refund, the shit loads of cancellations that filter through regularly, stretching back a year now. And no real end in sight.
We've basically had next to no income for a year, whilst also refunding all the profit made before the pandemic hit.

Imagine if a cinema had to refund the previous years worth of tickets sold?
Or a restaurant had to refund all their meals?

The nature of travel means we can't just stop, as we still have to service ongoing bookings, so we're simply not able to take full advantage of furlough.

I've said this previously but the company I work for was valued at £4m in January 2020.
Today it is worth nothing.

We've seen some big hitters go to the wall so far (STA Travel, Cruise & Maritime, Funway holidays), it's only gonna get worse and worse without some proper help from the powers that be.

Me and misses are 60 this year and 40 years married booked Mauritius for middle of July will be gutted if we can't go.
I really hope it comes off for you Mr Barm. We Managed to get away for my 60th at the end of 2019 and we just managed our 40th wedding anniversary in 2000 by the skin of our choppers. Wife's 60th had to be sacked off this year so we look forward now to having a belated.

We couldn't even go to a restaurant so I had to make dinner and we had Soup of the day, Pukka pie and peas and Aunt Bessies Bramley apple and do you know what it was nowhere near as good as going out to a nice restaurant however the Pies were beyond delightful. Fingers crossed for your Mauritius trip.

ive not been following the virus thread, but is that not the long term goal, have the Vaccine and let go 'get on with it' cant see we can do much more

Got Cape Verde booked in June. Probably less than 50/50 now even though we’ll both be fully vaccinated by then.

Exactly as the Govt are doing stage by stage. Lockdown will gradually ease and can be reversed if cases increase hospital admissions and deaths start to undermine the NHS.

Why would we need to stop all travel this year if the majority of adults have had a vaccine ? 50% of all adults have had the first jab. Utter nonsense. I work hard and want my holiday, didn’t go last year. Utterly strange how some are so against it. Also some absolutely terrible classist comments on here regarding those who go on holiday to Spain etc. Me and my partner are both working professionals under 30 with a child, prices are insane in the school holidays and the amount it costs to get there for even a week is insane.

I would assume it is not the vaccinated English folk going on their hols but more the destinations. Will the guys flogging fake raybans on the beach have had the vaccination? doubtful to be honest. Will all the maids be vaccinated? all restaurant staff etc etc. That is likely the main worry.

You could also be fully vaccinated then WHACK, a new strain is found that nobody knew about somewhere and you have 50k people from England mooching about the place getting sick from it. Governments will be worried how fast the South African strain mutated so will be tentative about travel at first. Doors being flung open all at once seems unlikely.

Countries with poor medical infrastucture may be lagging behind ourselves by months if not longer. Those places will stay on a no travel list until they catch up. Or maybe they are ok but have high international travel rates with other countries who are behind. They may have poorly controlled borders with neighbouring countries where people come and go with little to no checks.

Teenagers in your family may still be waiting but everyone else is vaccinated, i can't imagine the government being to keen to let them travel.

There are a few issues with starting the travel industry back up as i see it so would not even bother trying this year myself. I'll book when it's settled and i don't have to be arsed juggling my schedule with the can i/can't i go nonsense hanging over my head.
