Well said, mate. Hope you get to enjoy your holiday this year and many more in the future. We've spent thousands going to some amazing places whilst my kids were young, and I wouldn't trade those memories for the world. Still go on holiday together now even though the girls are 22 and 19.

In fact my eldest daughter is studying Spanish at Manchester Uni and has already had to postpone her year abroad one year because of COVID. She has to go this year and if she has to travel out on her own, she will, but it's be much nicer if we can all go out to Madrid to have a holiday and visit her a few times whilst she's there.

Sometimes, I think all these "don't go abroad, why not go to Margate?" people don't always think things through or see the bigger picture.

It was, if he was making a case for not opening pubs and restaurants too early, I am not due to get my jab until May/June or later, I am 48, how much later for people in their 20's and 30's? But the timeline for pubs/restaurants opening is June.

How does that make any sense?

Can they not get people vaccinated fully before opening up these places, places that are going to likely accelerate infection amongst the younger population?

It has been a year of on-off lockdowns and furlough schemes, would another month or 2 be that bad or is it worth the risk of a massive spike amongst the unvaccinated in June/July?

Same for the people who can't wait to rush off abroad, it will be there next year when the world has got the vaccine in full usage and over time it becomes manageable, maybe a top-up jab in winter or before a trip abroad.

It is the 'I haven't been away' line that makes me shake my head, you haven't been away, nor have many other people you are not unique.
 
I also love going abroad about 4 times a year but not this year,we don't need to undo all the good work and then have another lockdown let's wait till next year and holiday this year in Britain.We have a holiday home in Norfolk so I feel very fortunate we can can from April 12th,always seem to have lovely weather in the East it's that west coast Lancashire,Wales and the lake's always pissing down when I look at the forecast.

Not that it makes a jot of difference at the moment, but Mauritius was removed from our 'red list' last week along with Portugal....all very irrelevant though given their borders are closed and we can't leave our lovely little island.

I notice another government person today has poured cold water on the idea of summer holidays abroad.

Perhaps I have misplaced optimism but I'm sure, as long as we avoid obvious Covid pitfalls, that we'll have a handful of European destinations to choose from this summer, and maybe even a couple of further afield options.

Which is great, cos that means people who wanna stay home can stay home, and people who wanna head abroad can head abroad....and those who head abroad will likely be able to pick up some bargains.

In that instance, how do you propose that the travel industry will survive?

Believe it or not, not everyone wants to holiday in Britain for a variety of reasons.

The case being that everything we do during pandemic carries an element of risk, whether rushing off to Scarborough, eating out, going on the piss or attending a sports venue. International travel for recreation will not be allowed until May 17th and is open to reappraisal. Should we advocate a continuation of lock-down or just cool it completely on the overseas jollies.

If travel overseas is not viable due to variant spread then should we not also be curbing the 450,000 monthly visitors that have previously waltzed through our borders unchecked. It makes for little sense stopping Dougie and Jeannie vising the Costa's if a large percentage of the world gets a green flag to enter. This slow gradual approach back to some assemblance of normality makes sense, as we move toward the summer months.

Just this year only then back abroad next year,we don't need another spread and lockdown.Most people would love a holiday in Britain this year especially after us being stuck in one area for ages not being able to travel.

Well i'm still booked for Cyprus in June so lets see what happens, had the displeasure of having to go Turkey last year never again!
 
Yeah lets all go to Miami - makes sense - this was always going to be the case in the States......



 
Me and her indoors are planning day trips for when lockdown eases, sitting on a Welsh beach having fish and chips seems achievable right now, roll on summer.

Swimming with the grandchildren and the odd BBQ in the garden with my children round is all I need to look forward to and raise my spirits, foreign holidays can wait.

because I can’t really speak for everyone , I can only say I haven’t been away as I haven’t. Many went away last year. I never.

I have booked for October I will be going if we can, if sage or govt say we can’t then I won’t, hopefully by October many many more people globally will have been vaccinated.

but if come end of the year we can’t go on holiday again and are back in lockdown I will have to question the efficacy of the vaccine

This is what really bugs me; flippant comments about just resuming international travel in 2022 without even a single throwaway comment on how an already decimated industry would survive another year of turmoil.

Ultimately it will be down to the Government to decide what we can and can't do short term, and that's not just holidays but everything else socially.

If they say no international travel, then holidays at home it is.
If they say no fans in stadiums, then watching City on the tv it is.
If they say no gigs, then watching live music on Youtube it is

Etc etc

If that first one comes true (I don't think it will but I guess you never know) and they outlaw international travel for 2021, then you better hope they prop up the industry otherwise all those people throwing around their flippant comments about staying home until 2022....well there won't be an international travel industry by then and there will be hundreds of thousands of extra people on the dole.
 
No jollies for me in the foreseeable, will be happy to get on my local golf course, get the BBQ out in the better weather, hopefully return to the Etihad, beer gardens and watch the world handle Covid with the aid of vaccines and head towards full retirement.

Feel sorry for those who have stressful jobs and/or kids where that two weeks break in guaranteed sun really charges the batteries and more importantly allows for quality family time, it's a lot to miss out on.

We should not, I fully agree.

That doesn't mean we should make the problem worse by letting Dougie and Jeannie rampage through Benidorm getting pissed for a fortnight and then coming back home and infecting people around them.

I have worked right through the pandemic so Dougie and Jeannie get to eat food and drink, I haven't caught it, I have worn a mask and surgical gloves and doused myself with enough anti-bac gel to fill a bath several times over.

The fact we are close to being all vaccinated but are on the verge of opening up before we are just seems insane, as insane as the me me me folks desperate to get abroad because they haven't been for a whole year, it will still be there in 2022 waiting for us like it was before this pandemic.

you sound like you want to live a long life with zero risks at all so stay in your room don’t go out and I am sure you will exist for a long time so knock yourself out,

some of us want to get back to actually living and enjoying life with all the risks and rewards involved in that.

I want to go back to before as well, I love my holidays, weekend breaks etc etc and it's been horrible not seeing friends and family. But I'm with Mr T at the moment...I ain't getting on no plane. This country will be safe by the summer, or as safe as it can be, so I'm quite happy exploring the beautiful places it has to offer.
