Covid and travel discussion

It's hard to take from a personal point of view as I've got a lot invested in hospitality in Spain. The lack of tourists coupled with the residents and expats tightening their belts due to uncertainty has hit us hard.
That said, it's right to be cautious and if it means we can get some normality back at the end of the year then I can suffer another 6 months of losing money.

I think some of the demonising on here for wanting a holiday abroad is a bit off.

I consider myself very lucky that I have been able to work through this, have had my first jab and most importantly, that me and my family are all well. My heart goes out to people who have lost loved ones, are ill or have lost their livelihoods.

That being said, there's nothing wrong with looking forward to whatever you want to do when restrictions are lifted. I couldn't give a toss about pubs and I'm happy not to go in a restaurant or a cinema for a while. These will be the biggest source of new infections when things open up. However, I am not about to wade in and call people selfish for wanting to do these things when they can.

I'm confident foreign travel will startup in July and, as I've complied with every government guideline for the past 12 months, hopefully those of us who want to can get away will be able to. I'd happily give up 12 months of pubs/restaurants/cinemas/theatres for a holiday in Spain, but I guess we're all different.
Do you not think that's a bit short sighted? To happily sacrifice normal life for 12 months just to go abroad for a couple of weeks?

We are all different. I haven't watched any football since last March, reckon it's a sham and think it should have been cancelled (denying the Scousers the League), but I respect the fact that many folk say the matches helps them cope.

I'd happily give up all foreign holidays if it meant I'll definitely get my life of travelling round the UK visiting pubs and football back, but I respect the fact some folk can't do without the sun and the beach.

Each to their own, though I wish people would be more open-minded about their own country.

Other warm countries are available.

Would you really give up 12 months of finally being able to go out with your family and friends just to lie on a beach, eat at a buffet and watch the entertainment in the evening?

Would I give up leaving the house, seeing family or being able to go for a drive or a walk in the country for 12 months - absolutely not. But that's not what I said, was it? I said I'd happily not go to a pub/restaurant/cinema/theatre for 12 months, and I'd do that in a heartbeat to be able to go on the holiday I choose. Holidays are way more important to me than any of those things.

And it's not all about sitting on the beach or watching entertainment in the evening or whatever - some of it is about that, but a lot of it is about experiencing the atmosphere that comes with a trip abroad. I've had nice holidays in the UK, but I don't get the same feeling as a trip to Spain, Florida or whereever.

EDIT: Also forgot to say that we won't be going anywhere abroad until my youngest daughter has had her first jab. I'm sure a lot of people are in similar positions.

I wonder if people would be saying the same if they decided to keep the pubs closed over the Summer.
Yes of course, if that‘s what circumstances call for. Far better to try to beat this thing this year than dodging in and out. I miss the pub as much as anyone but pubs and foreign holidays are nitshit problems compared to what loads have suffered over the past year.

Nobody is arguing with that, but it seems that people want the government to make decisions in March on what might happen in June/July/August. It's impossible to know what infection and vaccination rates will be in three months time. All the hullabaloo from the press about "no holidays until October" is just daft.

My friend owned a business in benidorm. he's finally chucked it in

People have lost loved ones who they couldn't even spend their last hours with.

Some have died alone & lonely in care homes.

Some have been unable to see their nearest & dearest, some of whom have had virtually no human contact for a year.

Some have been seriously ill in hospital with no one there to comfort them.

Some are suffering debilitating long term effects from this awful disease.

Some people have lost their businesses.

Some have lost their livelihoods.

And in this thread we have people crying like babies and saying there could be riots because they won't be able to go on their holiday abroad for a while longer.

I think selfish, entitled wankers is an understatement for them.

Has anyone been watching these?? most beautiful scenic railway programmes, the uk has some stunning scenery especially when you travel this way, we really take things for granted in the uk I’m at an age I’d look out of place on a beach in my speedos:) not interested in clubs, etc but definitely want to explore the beautiful places of the uk more.
Let me tell you something...you wouldn't look out of place on a beach in your Speedos if you were sat next to me.....

But we’ll all be jabbed and safe from infection wont we?
Its healthy to question what the fuck is going on. Im no tin foil hat nutter but if we dont question stuff then we are fucked.

do u think the gov dont do shit to suit THERE (sic) needs, not ours ? Sometimes ?
What needs are those? How does the government imposing foreign holiday bans, in any way suit the government and not us?

Knock yourself out because unless you are aware of some MP with shares in Butlins, I am at a loss.

indeed. But there’s a fair chunk of people working their arses off all year to put their family on a beach for 2 weeks and get a load of food and presents at Christmas.

Maybe an opportunity for ppl to re-think/recalibrate their priorities? Or maybe not.

People rightly want questions answering that never seem to get asked by the media, our freedom has been taken away for over a year now when we were told 12 weeks to flatten the curve.
Then we were told vaccines are the way out of it but over half the adult population have been vaccinated but we’re still not free

protect the NHS but if the elderly and vulnerable or now safe cos they’ve taken the vaccine and won’t catch Covid or at least won’t make them as sick then hospitalisations won’t be a problem surely ?

so why are we still not free to live our lives ?
Chris Whitty said the 3rd wave “ will find those “ who aren’t vaccinated and those the vaccine didn’t work on

So he’s saying the vaccine might not work ?
if they’re unsure about what this vaccine will and won’t do why are they so eager to make healthy people take it ?
why hasn’t the CEO of Pfizer whos 69 not taken the vaccine ?
why have they made vaccine company’s exempt from paying any damages caused by the vaccine ?
why are the people who’ve died after the vaccine not been reported on by the MSM ?

might be answers to these but I think we deserve to know them

I would say its just a good job some of us question it rather than all being sheep and blindly following The Man

Maybe it's good to question if the moon is made of cheese? Seriously mate what on earth would be the point of the government deliberately putting blockers on foreign holidays if no such blockers were needed? It would be madness - it pisses the public RIGHT off, which is not a great idea to start with. And also fucks up countless UK businesses, desperate for a return to normal holiday regimes. It's not a decision that would be made lightly or for anything other than valid reasons.

I have my opinions pal on a lot of what has gone on. Id rather chat in private tho

there are 14 amendments to the mandating of overseas travel, or banning of it if you will, including usual stuff such as being airline crew, various jobs, medical, funerals etc etc

the final and last amendment is " Property, including visiting estate agents, viewing places to buy or to rent or to “visit a residential property to undertake any activities required for the rental or sale of that property” "

this is dubbed the Stanley Johnson loophole as it was alleged Boris' father had run off to Greece to get some sun, while he claimed he was making his home over there 'covid proof'

whatever the truth of the above, i wonder how many people will be 'viewing property' in Greece or Spain this summer, or 'doing up' existing houses for 4 months?

I was bored of the endless repeats of “a place in the sun.”

good this can continue....

Ha, or how many will all of a sudden have an Uncle Stavros, who just so happens to be on his last legs in Greece.
