COVID Watch

Quite frankly as a retired Doctor who has been involved in football, Gillingham and Maidstone United club Doctor, I was so surprised that the team stayed in a hotel in London. It beggars belief that this was allowed. How stupid can one get. OK you have to think about fitness and recuperation, but surely players, coaches, staff welfare comes first.Especially when you have resources like private aircraft on tap.

I am staggered that certain teams have been allowed to have fans, Scousers for eaxmple. Literally a few weeks ago they had the highest rates of Covid. Not only is it an unfair advantage for the team to have fans, but medically, makes no sense. Have a sharp lockdown, things get better remove the lockdown, and in no time you get a rebound. The only way this will get better is for immunisation to be rolled out or herd immunity and that is usually 80% of any population. I was in hospital as a patient today and spoke to an ex colleague, a consultant who has still not been immunised. Nurses in out patients are apparently low risk so have not had the jabs either. This was in East Grinstead, one of the greatest hospitals for plastic surgery worldwide. For those of historic interest, it is where the WW2 pilots had pioneering surgery.

The quandary for me is how important is football. Its not just football but the arts in general.Does watching football improve the mental welfare of the nation ? I would argue it does for a significant proportion of the population, even on TV. Let us not understimate the mental component in illness. If we dont do the things we love, we become low and that affects our immune systems.

Sadly we face a question of risk now. Do I feel sorry for footballers who get Covid? Of course I do , but no less than the nurses, doctors and health care workers who work for a pittance in comparison at much greater risk. I feel we have reached the point that we were last year. Close it all down until herd immunity and immunisations take hold. But if it does continue, I find it hard to feel more sorry for people earning 150k plus a week compared to the vast majority of the population. And please believe me, having worked with footballers, many are very thoughtless, and that is polite.

Best Wishes to you all.
My late father in law was in East Grinstead for 2 or 3 years, having been horribly burned when the fuel tank of his Spitfire exploded. He finished up,with two claws for hands and a much repaired face and chest. He used to tell the story of how he and some colleagues would drive around the locale waving their burned bits at the local poplace scaring them to death. I've forgotten the name of the plastic surgeon pioneer who made E.G. world famous with his innovative techniques. Echoed later by Prof Sharp in Bradford after the fire there. He invented new techniques due to the urgency and number of those patients. He operated on me for cancerous growth in my lip. Great job.

Wasn't it Macindoe?

To be honest I didn’t bother replying fully as it was not worth getting into a long protracted response. But as you have now asked... both Australia and (especially) New Zealand are in infinitely easier positions both geographically and financially to stem a pandemic. London is essentially a hub of Europe and therefore is a place of transition. Heathrow is one of (if not the busiest) airports in the world, not to mention all the other airports dotted around a relatively small island. Throw in train and ferry access.. and bang you have a real problem.

Just compare the population of the UK per landmass compared to Australia and especially New Zealand and it makes your point laughable, they sit in the middle of nowhere surrounded by nothing but ocean and the UK sits in the middle of Europe.

I am not for one moment saying that the government here has done a good job of handling the situation as they clearly haven’t but comparing controlling boarders here to Australia and (rather amusingly) New Zealand is a joke. Those countries are a million times easier to lock down especially during those first few weeks when the damage was done. There was no room for manoeuvre in Europe. Hence the situation.

There is a reason why Europe and the States have been so badly hit.

Fore Christ sake even Germany has struggled and they are notoriously efficient and disciplined as a society.

Weather is also a massive key factor to the current problems in the UK and many other European countries as we are entering the depths of winter and are all spending our time inside. This virus thrives in a colder climate, which would point to why a lot of the tropical and sub tropical countries have faired better throughout this pandemic despite having inferior health care systems.

Anyway.. boarders and handling of boarders aside, football should not be played here (and probably the rest Europe) until the Spring imo.
Some good points there

Fucking Noddy in his post match interview.. basically saying COVID issues shouldn’t stop football from being played and having more than a sly dig at us and saying they have it under control.

let me tell you now you little wrinkly teenager.. no one has this under control.. in the world. Anywhere. Arrogant dickhead.

All these managers and pundits will look stupid when the league gets postponed in the next few weeks. IMO it will 100% happen. We are fucked until March.

Wrinkly Teenager would be a great new username

So going by past incidences the club and players involved in the tests should have received their results or be receiving them just about now.

In the next couple of hours, ITKs (who are actually KFAs) will start putting out some leaks, some results, some info, which won't be too off the mark mind you.

Then by late afternoon/early evening we'd hear some official statement stating a further X no of players and staff were tested positive in latest round of testing and so the CFA remains closed and talks are ongoing with PL and EFL regarding future fixtures ... OR the latest round of test results returned no further positive tests and so CFA will re-open and training to resume from tomorrow and those who previously tested positive are continuing to self-isolate.

The one thing City must not do is feel pressured into playing if they are not able to do so. Fuck the haters
