They lost this match in the first innings when Bairstow, Pope and Ali threw away their wickets.

Should have had a 200 run lead and been bowling for the match instead of giving India a chance on an incredibly flat pitch.
You can add to that poor bowling in the second Indian innings. Moeen bowled 26 overs but not one maiden, so he could never close an end down.

Well, we made it to tea. Just about.

@ancoats, I think you're fairly safe re your promise yesterday!

i never did fancy us winning but the draw should have been on the cards
its crazy to think we was 100/0 and now 193/8 is simply not good enough at home
so many talking points and no more covering the cracks.. QUESTIONS have to asked about root as captain

That’s just not a discussion that will be had until after January. Seems to be accepted amongst the media that he’ll captain them Down Under.

England are scheduled to play three tests in the Caribbean in March, so if there is to be a new captain, then that will presumably be their initiation.

There are some questions to be asked - bizarre bowling tactics in the 2nd innings at Lords for example. But the failings of this team come down to fragile batting so many times, I'm not sure what he can really do as a captain.

Many of the problems you highlight were all too apparent the last time England toured Australia, so they’re not current in the sense of new. The post mortem then was supposed to be the catalyst to improvements before this winter’s return, yet England are still no nearer having an established batting order, a harnessed bowling attack, recognised spinners, or a settled wicket keeper.

I don’t follow the one-day game closely, but I don’t think England took quite so long to address the failings in that format.

We just don't seem to have the players in the longer format. We're lacking a spinner. Jimmy isn't going to go on bowling forever. Archer has a major injury and Wood is also often injured. And who can come in other than Stokes to address our batting frailties?

In ODI's we were just stuck in the old ways of playing the game. We saw what the best sides were doing and brought in an aggressive style that would win more games than it lost. Playing our best test players in ODIs wasn't working. Instead we had specialists that could score aggressively. We were sharp in the field and we were able to reduce the scoring and take wickets in the middle order. In Morgan we have had a captain who is willing to play risky cricket to get results and it works more often than not.
