Some archive footage for you, to have a look at cricket over the years

England winning the ashes in the 5th test at the oval in 1953, the whole way everything is conducted is just so alien to us now

Ambrose cutting through the Aussies, 7 wickets for 1 run in a spell (1993?). The commentaries aren't too animated until his 6th. Boon, Hughes, Waugh, great names

Great watch.
Some notable things in the Pathe clip include:
the absence of stewards (not needed)
the absence of bars and drinking
the number of young women in attendance
the number of people carrying suitcases with their own food
the crowd gathering en masse at the end
the onside cordon the Australians used

Yes lots of young women

I liked the pitch invasion, so at odds with the very calm and proper manner in which wickets were claimed and the game was played. Nobody seemed arsed there was a pitch invasion.

That was customary after every Test until not that long ago. Teams would also be presented with their awards on the balconies. Similar thing happened at Rugby Union internationals. Television, entertainment culture, and health and safety have changed the experience of attending sport immeasurably.

The pitch invasion never used to be an issue. I remember England winning at Olt Trafford in ‘81. The stewards made a dash to get a rope up to keep people off the square but weren’t bothered (or couldn’t do anything) about the crowd congregating on the outfield.

Different times.
