Our spinners need experiance on pitches that have been exposed to the sun in the middle of summer.
Not the green seamers that suit 70 mph nibblers that we play on in April,May and September.
The spinners who play T20 in the summer do ok.As i have said many times we need to prioritise 4 day cricket.

Swann had a better cricketing brain and mentality than Leach.

The closest bowler to Leach for England was Monty Panesar. He again lacked the cricketing brain to be consistently good, but had a better action and revs on the ball than Leach does.

Leach is consistent and can hold an end up like Giles did, without winning many games for us.

Ah, Panesar, the butt of one of Warne's more brutal putdowns. "he's not played 33 tests, he's played 1 test 33 times".

I agree, he did make the ball spin, just didn't have much nous.

Their comparative averages, strike rates and economy rates suggest otherwise. My memory tells me Swann was a far better bowler than Leach. He played a lot more tests too and has taken a lot more wickets so that's an important consideration. But taking the important statistics into consideration they've been relatively similar and Leach has been flogged at times.

He's sat there playing no cricket for months before being put in and expected to perform. He's had to bowl a lot of overs on pitches offering nothing. There have been mitigating circumstances that have led to his poor bowling. I don't think he's going to suddenly become a world beater, but as I said - his economy, SR and average are all similar to Swann's. So can he be that bad?!

Guess stats can be misleading? Swann affected matches much more (in my memory anyway!) than Leach does.

I can only think of one test match Leach has actually affected the result in and that was as a batsman! (Plus the Headingley 1*)

Edit: Left arm spinners don’t do that well in test cricket. That’s why I compared him to Monty rather than Swann.

Yeah I agree with you there...was surprised when I saw them. I think all round Swann would heap pressure on at one end and then the quicks could do more damage too. Leach doesn't do the same.

Lost the toss and got put in!

Seems it’s going to move around for a few hours like the first test match, only thing we don’t know is is it a pitch that will be like the other two flat!? Or have the West Indies thrown in a result pitch which on day three it’s moving all over place?

West Indies picked an extra seamer that says it all and I bet there thought if Root won the toss he would choose to bat anyway, expediting swing move a lot this ball.
