Realistically if Root steps down or is relinquished of his role for me there is only 3 candidates, stokes, broad or Anderson.
The latter 2 would be short term options as they are coming to the end.
None for me a realistic options.

Stokes would bowl himself for every available over if he failed with the bat.

Would you keep root then or who would you have in mind?
I have no clue. Nobody shouts out to me “leader of men”.

Couple that with 9 of our team now being mediocre or pensionable and we don’t have a great immediate future.

Then, counties have no incentive to create first class players anymore and our longer term future looks even bleaker.

Anderson has never captained anyone, Zak Crawley could be a born captain but it is impossible to tell from the outside. No one expected Graeme Smith to become a successful test captain at 22.

It is very hard to judge who would be any good without knowing who has a cricketing brain and the aptitude.

Can you see anyone, anywhere playing cricket who is English, that shows those traits?

I still think Root will be the skipper for the summer, but I do think they should have done more to keep Moeen Ali in the squad. Getting on, admittedly, but might have been a decent short-term option.

There's not an outstanding candidate to take on the captaincy. But that's not a reason to keep Root on.
Broad and Anderson were vital to his captaincy as he lets games drift.
Going at 2 runs an over meant that matches rarely got away from them, but our failure to score more than 350 in less than perfect conditions has put the capt and bowlers under greater scrutiny especially without the pace of Wood, Archer.
However lets not forget he totally mismanaged Archer.

Justin Langer linked with the England Coach job this morning.
Ask him if he can double up and open the batting too !!!
I will tout again for Will Rhodes - Warwickshire. A captain that is used to winning or not losing matches.
The current set up cannot stay and we move in ever decreasing circles.

We should move away from this fascination with foreign coaches. The whole point of international sport is that it’s your best team and coaches against theirs and we’ve been moving away from that for far too long.
