Stokes is indisputably the better, and more innovative captain but if any of them had a single bloody mindset and refused to listen to others (beside Silverwood) I'd argue that is Root. Stokes on the other hand has been credited with actively seeking feedback from the whole team, a throwback to the Vaughan era when he said he wanted 11 captains in the field.

For example in the first test the close in fielders were given freedom to adjust their positions slightly based on their own instinct as to where they thought the ball might go rather than be micromanaged. Another claim I heard kind of blew my mind. Apparently the idea to go short with the new ball in the 2nd innings and not bother trying even a few overs of traditional line and length came from none other than Joe fucking Root!

all very good points and valid views, matey.
the main points are everybody is England best captains sat on our armchairs and would do this or that.

but results speaks volumes and winning is key, under Joe Root as captain he had a very bad run of results, I think it may have been 1 win in 17 test, so you can not keep being captain on them bases alone.

Stokes is the perfect captain for this coach. They work well because they share an idea.

Under any other coach I doubt he'd be as effective, and I think there's probably coaches that Root would have been a much better captain under.

It's worked out well, I like Joe Root and after a couple of really miserable years I much prefer to see him as the relaxed older statesman enjoying himself again.

Worth noting that Stokes seems to have more faith in Root as a bowler than Root had himself. Bowled 21 overs in Pak’s second innings.

Root is a good bowling option because he generates more turn than most of our finger spinners. He seems to have improved beyond being a partnership breaker, with greater accuracy in recent games.

Root will go down as one of our greatest ever cricketers. Root lacked integrity as well as captaincy skills when captaining the side. Not selecting Jimmy and abroad together for the Ashes after rotating them all year was sufficient grounds for boing him as captain, as well as the losing streak (thst were linked anyway).

The whole system was wrong whilst Root was captain. Strauss seemed to want to build for the future by giving others a chance and resting Broad and Anderson to save them for the big tests. But that's a pointless strategy because they were our best bowlers and the best people to coach the youngsters coming through. It also meant we kept losing because we hadn't picked our best bowling attack for that series. There was an obsession for building towards the next Ashes. The best way to do that is by winning tests, not messing around until it arrives.

Refreshing to see us back to winning ways and playing such edge of your seats cricket. It's wonderful and the Ashes is shaping up to be an intriguing battle next summer. Hopefully we can go and whitewash Pakistan and make history. With the series won we can now rotate if we want to. Maybe have a look at Ahmed over Leach.

It’s brilliant how we are playing. The Ashes should be an amazing contest like you say and a clean sweep in Pakistan would be a great Xmas present.

Strauss and Root were dishonest by not picking Jimmy and Broad together for the start of the Ashes. I agree with the rest of your point and the “strategy” was pointless anyway.

Stokes has balls and does things his way and not by the book
I've never questioned root's ability as a cricketer, just being captain,

you have to stand up for yourself and make changes and not listen to somebody else, single bloody mindset
He's also got the players to have the same mindset, a much more fearless belief that they can win whatever the circumstances.

It's a gift.

They won't always win, but they'll fight hard trying and you can't ask for more than that. However, it's the media that could be the enemy of this new vibrant style, so let's see what happens when they lose, especially if they lose badly.

Not dishonest, more misguided.
