hmm, this could be interesting. Let's see how they bat through the middle order. Next 50 runs very important for both teams

For a side with two 90+ mph bowlers, this is either quite toothless because of the pitch, or the WI are batting quite well. More of the second, I think, but quite a large dollop of the first.

Archer and Wood are simply just fast. On spicy, quick pitches, they are brutal, but they don’t have any variations so if the pace doesn’t trouble the batsmen, they’re pretty ineffective. The ball is totally dry too, which won’t help their cause.

Conditions aren't helping, I agree, but we'll see what WI do with it tomorrow.

Archer is just green. He was rushed into the side, and has only played 8 tests. I don't think he knows much about the long game, and was hyped ridiculously.

Having said that, England should put up 300+ fairly easily in the 2nd innings.

Our batting has been poor for years. I’m not hopeful of us getting 300 against many teams at the moment.

you’re right about Archer, but I haven’t seen much progression in his cricketing brain. Hopefully it’ll click for him soon.

Yes, the lack of progress seems obvious, although obviously he was injured a fair bit. Strange, and I wonder if the 1-day stuff is dominating.

Someone will get in and make some. I dislike Stokes - just can't warm to him - but I can see him getting a quick 80+. The top order looks feeble though, although it is only the first innings in many months. Buttler looks less of a test player whenever he bats! In fact, there's probably only about 3-4 who are test grade.

Crawley and Sibley are also relatively new to test cricket. They’re worth persevering with unless we have anyone better. Burns is average, but can stick around for a while. Not really sure why Denly is still playing. He’s old and average. Maybe his leg spin?

Root always seems to get 60 and lose concentration and therefore his wicket.

Stokes has been a bell end on and off the pitch, but seems to be maturing.

Buttler is frustrating as he has all the talent in the world, but somehow always fails in test cricket. It must be mental.

Application is lacking, not prepared to be patient and wear down the opposition. He should go and have a chat with Geoffrey Boycott.

I know Sibley/Crawley are new, and I don't know much about them. Leaving a ball in the second over and being bold is not a good look though.

We don't really seem to have much in the way of technical batsmen. The WI seem to have a fair amount of technique, and I'm very interesting to see what Pakistan bring over. There's bound to be one mystery seamer in there.

I wonder if Buttler should be given a batting only role, and give Foakes a shot. It might be worth trying.

Archers seems unable to bowl 6" outside the offstump at the moment.

Or Atherton and Hussein (as a non-opener, who started at no. 5). They seem quite open to help with suggestions.

Interesting to hear Holding talk about a conversation he had with Wood. Wood after a while took on the suggestion, and is more balanced now.

The whole approach to test cricket since Flower left has regressed. Bayliss concentrated on one day stuff, successfully, but to the detriment of the test team.

Silverwood is new, but doesn’t seem to have got the approach right yet.

Is Atherton that chap we hardly ever saw play for Lancashire and the supporter of the evil reds.

Bit of damage limitation there still in the game if we make 300+....... edit just taken into account our top order we need rain

its always going to be hard getting back into any sort of form in cricket ? the lock down and no proper places to train indoors or outdoors or the bowling machines, its harder than footballers or most team sports because cricket is all about timing and pitches and weather, i would say batting is the hardest to get right and getting back to feeling the ball hitting the bat in the middle and timing it. bowling is also getting your lengths and lines right and fitness of bowling 4 or 5 overs at full pace, but you get more of a chance to make mistakes then a batter who can just make one and out

don't really need to look much into this test or the next 2 and results will be all over the place from day to day
but if there is one thing its great to see proper fast bowling again by the west indies, they are getting back to something of the 70s/80s and can bowl you out in a flash and i love that sort of cricket they leave nothing in the locker room

good test this and tomorrow if the weather is ok will be a good watch, england trying to get runs or stay in and then the west indies bowling fast and maybe some chin music bring it on
