I agree with that, growing up, we only played midweek as the men played Sat and Sun and we played 20 over cricket, as I said that was over 30 years ago. Simple fact is there are more teams turning out at the weekend than in the week, born out by there being far more leagues at the weekend.

Yes totally agree. Our areas midweek league has 10 teams (Compared to 30 plus teams playing on a saturday in the same area) . Half of them are third teams sent by the bigger teams, the rest and the team I play for are made up of small villages who can't sustain a team to play at a more competitive level. We've only been going for 25 years but if it wasn't for midweek cricket we probably wouldn't have a team. Midweek cricket is made up of old men, kids and shit players who play for a laugh. I love nothing better than a game of cricket on a sunny Wednesday evening, it's perfect.

I don't think we're getting anywhere here, we could go on for days. In my opinion, if there's a ball, a bat and some wickets, it's cricket. Yours is you believe you should have to bowl a team out to win, fair enough mate.

Just going off my experiene. Midweek cricket seems to have a lot more casual players, players who are shit but go down for a laugh. Come the weekend it's fifty overs and it's normally played by the half decent players who take an interest in playing. Where I live, there's far more interest in twenty over cricket than fifty over.

I am going off my experience as well and am talking about organised league cricket which there is far more of at weekends not friendly games, and whilst some of the cricket at weekends is 50 overs, there are still other formats played, probably more and not just limited overs, with its restrictions on fielding and number of overs 1 bowler can bowl.

I started this off saying I was a dying breed, I know my position isnt popular but I dont care, I like what I like, just as you do, and I dont want t20 banned or stopped, I just think its a shame that the purest form of the game is suffering because all the money is being pumped into the latest fad by the Indian TV companies, which isnt being used to promote all areas of the game. I accept what BigOscar said about there not being a proper world cup for test cricket and it suffering for that, but again that is because the Indian cricket board would rather promote and pump the money into the IPL than anything else.

Well done to the Windies. However they sum up modern day cricket.
Gayle can earn big bucks playing T20 around the world. The others will know they can do the same now. That's why they aint interested in test cricket.
I heard the other day AB de Villiers get £180k per year playing for South Africa, but can more than 5 times that playing in the IPL.
Test cricket pisses on hit and giggles of T20. I would love to see the West Indies actually get a competitive team in that format instead of being mullered by all and sundry inside 4 days.

Not going to happen, test cricket is dead in the Windies now. They are just going to specialise in T20 and make it their "thing". Similar is happening in Fiji now, they are slowly sacrificing their 15s rugby to play more 7s as they are better at it.

I think the issue isnt helped by their board, who are constantly in dispute with the team and ban players, the natural reaction of Windies cricket fans is to back the team and the players and not the suits. A lot of the issues are because the Windies generally played test cricket around the time of the IPL, our tour over there is usually around now and it eats into the IPL, players want to be released to play in that. I can see why the players want to play t20 and its all about money, who would want to put in 20 times the effort for less reward in any walk of life?? If they could sort out releasing the players to earn the money, or better still that money was better distributed and not just to used to inflate the IPL's importance, then you would see the appetite return. There is still a deep love for the game and test cricket, in that region.

Another interesting point is that there's loads of players themselves who don't enjoy playing test cricket. My mate plays for Durham, he says loads of them hate it and find it boring.
