Agree they've been exceptional so consistent we just had Broad. Take smith out of there side there bowlers wouldn't have the luxury of all those runs as a cushion. Also we have had Anderson out all series that gives the Aussies a massive lift!

So Aussies are a one man team.

spot on that is the key runs on the board

the game is about batting and scoring runs and then have your bowlers bowl to a attacking fields and many slips catchers and pitch it up from the swing bowlers, england have never put a score on the board so we can attack them, even when we have bowled first and had them down and out they still got runs on the board with a last couple of wickets to add big runs and give them the chance to attack us

but the make up of this england batting line up team is a shamble, and the batting order and people asked to bat are just not good enough at test cricket, from losing Alastair cook as a opener to now is crazy ?? going into the ashes without a settled opening pair and not having a number 3 or 4 that can bat long and stay in when its hard is the simple make up of any test team, the first 4 batters can play in different slots even open the bat if asked to

but from opening pair to batting 6 and 7 this england team are poor only stokes and burns can hold their heads up so what really has gone wrong ?? am not having this ODI worlds cup bollocks ?? this crap happened down under in the ashes 2 years ago and nothing changed, even moeen ali was still the first pick in the spinners role at the start of this ashes even jimmy anderson was still number one when archer was dropped ?? the big holes in the batting line up was never looked at and just patched up with ODI players ?? what is needed was 2 years to build a squad and team for this ashes but the ECB did nothing

when england lose tomorrow heads have to roll and start right at the top from ECB team of selectors to head coach to captain, we need to go out and find the best young talent batting wise and throw them in at the deep end and keep them in, keep archer burns leach stokes broad and woakes curran and maybe find another out and out fast bowler, forget the results for the next year and half and just settle the team down into the roles and then the run up to the the ashes in 2021/22 push them on

Totally agree, they need to bring in a specialist opener to partner Burns, and another specialist mid order batsman, (pope)? and drop Roy and Buttler.

Burns
New opener
Denly
Root
Pope
Stokes
Bairstow wk

That looks a lot more balanced top/middle order. Have no idea who the opener would be though and Denly must also be on very thin ice.

Could give Stoneman another hurl, but two left-handed openers and his history would likely play against the fact that he and Burns know each other’s games and know the track.

They chose Overton for this one as he would give extra bounce and apparently bowl a heavy load, so expect Woakes back for the Oval. :-o

Who would be the fastest English bowler in county cricket who's not had a look in?

Always been a big fan of raw pace at the oval, and with a tour to SA where pace is usually key.

Good post, and they can’t blame all this on Bayliss.

They have two Tests in New Zealand, in late November, before moving on to four Tests in South Africa, in December/January. There are T20s before the NZ Tests and ODIs after the RSA Tests, so the selectors have a golden opportunity in the middle to start creating a recognisable Test side, who have those months to start gelling, irrespective of results. If they don’t start now, hopefully even at the Oval, it’ll be just as painful when they go back Down Under.

Hard to say, but seven years ago the ECB said it hoped that in 10 years it would have a conveyor belt of genuinely fast talent, who would make 90 mph the old 80 mph. Even the expression ‘conveyor belt’ sounds outdated now. It seems that many players who show promise as genuinely quick sustain (recurring) injuries and then fail to fulfil their promise.

Think we need some batsmen, going by our scores in these tests.

I am no cricket man but we only need 350 odd? 9 men average 40 each? Doesn’t seem that hard to me? Especially if a couple get 100? Am I missing something??

Yeah, the maths in that is sound enough but it really doesn’t work like that. Hardly any team has chased down 380-odd to win a test match, even with a less fragile batting line-up than England’s. England themselves have never successfully chased more than 362 to win a test and that was in the last match. Before that it was 332. That’s because it’s harder to bat in the 4th innings as a general rule of thumb because the pitch deteriorates over time. There will be uneven bounce for the pacemen to exploit. Lyon will probably be spinning it round corners tomorrow as well.

Not to mention the glaring lack of individual (in many) and collective confidence amongst England’s players.

Ok 350 divided by 8 - 43 ish each. Seems possible?
Technically you were right I guess as there’s 11 players and 2 gone, but game over when 10th man out. It’s possible but to score that many runs on the last day of a test match is very unlikely. England will go out there trying to simply stay in and get a draw like last time

Yeah and they shouldnt have done that either because Stokesy for plumb lbw, and but for the aussies wasting there reviews England would have lost the headingley test. For tomorrow England have a chance for a draw, bit i cant see the batsmen applying themselves, so unfortunately its a aussie win.

A lot of them, understandably, look nackered. I don’t actually think we’ve been too bad overall, Smith really has been the difference. Given how good their bowling attack is as well though (anyone saying they’re a one man team is forgetting they have the no.1 bowler in their team as well), Smith aside we’ve matched up pretty well. It’s more we’ve been lacklustre in the field and with the ball. The only bowler we’ve had that’s been consistently good is Broad.

Been on a flight from Sydney to portland. Missed the whole day's play. Just seen score. Holy shit Smith is too fucking good! Still think England are a chance with another Stokes miracle. Dave Warner wtf
You need a good kip, England have no chance on that wicket, it’s deteriorating faster than The Granny shaggers hair transplant.
