Burns,Hameed and Bairstow are not test standard.
Foakes needs to be given the gloves.
Time for Jimmy and Broad to retire.
Tend to agree though I can see Hameed getting more time; just don’t think there’s much that can be changed. Unless someone is performing exceptionally for the Lions, I could see something like this starting in the Caribbean in March.

Hameed
Crawley
Malan
Root
Pope
Stokes
Foakes
Robinson
Woakes
Wood
Leach

England need to rip up the current template as it’s clearly a shambles.
Go back to the Brearley days and pick the best Captain out there first.
Give the bloody thing to Will Rhodes at Warwickshire.
Knowing the ECB they’ll give it to Warwick Davis.
They picked the wrong batsman at that club with Sibley too. Give Sam Hain a good look at it.
Foakes has to play - best keeper out there.
I’ll continue this but so far
Rhodes -capt
Hain
Root
Stokes
Foakes
Robinson.

if The Hundred is so successful it should go back into funding the first class structure so we have the preeminent 4 day game.

In fact, although I don't like the branding of the hundred, the easiest way is to do a 4 day city variant version. Match the salary cap rules. 8 overseas players contracted, of which 4 can play at any one time (to account for international commitments). Play each team once, with semi-finals and a final, so 9 games total.

The other 10 grounds can have a shield tournament with the remaining county players and their own choice of overseas as a development system.

The counties should be 3 groups of 6 to improve competition with smaller divisions.

I think smaller first class tournaments, competitive from the off is more beneficial than the all-season drawn out nature of the County Championship. That's where I think the Sheffield Shield has an advantage.

I'd then negotiate with Cricket Australia to preserve the future of the Ashes by sending the 2 finalist city teams down to the Sheffield Shield, in return the 2 finalists there can come over to play our city based four day competition?

The international players may not play many games, but the talent underneath would get such an improved competitive four day experience that it would suit both countries.

If both parties want The Ashes to continue as any form of marketing dream, then like the Ryder Cup the structure feeding the end tournament needs to adapt.

For the future, we've got to go with the likes of;

Pope
Sibley/Rhodes
Lawrence
Foakes
Overton
Archer (when fit)

As for the openers, maybe give Roy a go again, we're not blessed with depth are we Vince maybe?

Thankless job at the minute.

James Vince is the man with Nasser as manager/coach.

could be a very good call and nasser as coach would be my call as well
nobody has questions root as a batsman but his leadership has captain would still give him a place at 3 or 4

but the whole coaching side of england is rotten and wrong ? i still feel we need to break away from the other forms of cricket with the ECB and just have a test setup on its own ? one man to build his test side and have no involvement from 20/20 or the 100 let a ODI coach sort that side of the cricket out

yes you need players to play all forms of cricket and i get that ? but test cricket must be the first choice and no ducking in and out because of the IPL or other tours. you are playing for england and that's it

pope nope
sidley nope
overton nope

but like you say its Thankless job

we should forget results and just build a new test team and give them time new coach new captain and young players without any test cricket just throw them in at the deep end

The players out there is all we have we have two tests left so think that team is a bit of a switch up and Crawley needs a bit of pressure of him and burns he ain’t great but he is the best we have at opening up there also think that’s our best bowlers.

Leach rather play with 10

Archer will retire from test match cricket That is if his shoulder is fine when he has recovered

the worst team and test match england have ever played in (incredible)

lets break this down ?
Australia only made 267 and england could not score 268 with 20 wicket to make them bat again ? let that sink in

the ashes is the biggest contest in test cricket and you get 2 years home or away to build a team good enough to play for your country. a proud moment walking out in the ashes and you made it to the top. your deem good enough to play for england and fight for the right to play and try and win the ashes vs australia

but sorry this england squad did not win the right to be called test cricketers to play for england in the ashes
if your a england player this morning you stand down and walk away for test cricket and let somebody else have a go.

if you are that bad at your job you get the sack its that simple ? if you work at McDonald's and keep dropping the milk shakes your fired or if you work at a bank and make a mistake over and over again your sacked

what more can we say ?
enough is enough and change HAS to happen and nobody involved with this england team should be aloud to play for england in test cricket ever again. from the tea lady to joe root heads have to roll. i don't care who get the call to play in the next 2 test. in fact i don't see england playing them and will come home because of covid-19
The world test championship is, not some two horse race featuring average teams. Only Michael Vaughan types who never won anything claim it as a trophy.

Australia were humiliated by India reserves earlier this time last year, and India were runners up in the championship. Cashes is a money spinner, and should not have been played this year, it may as well be England v Scotland at football and ignoring the world cup.

They didn't get 2 weeks to prepare never mind 2 years, that was half the problem.

I vet most people complaining is this thread haven't been to a county championship game for a few years.
Was thinking last year that County grounds could do more to attract people ‘WFH’, a trend that is likely to continue. They have tended to invest more in terms of catering for the corporate guests, but if they were more creative with things like ticketing/catering/internet/charging stations, they could attract a different kind of audience.

The fixture list for next season has still not been announced, so I suspect it’s being re-written in light of current events.

I’m gutted about the Ashes like everyone else and have gone through the full range of expletives and adjectives but having just read this have a little more sympathy

The players must be wishing they were anywhere but there at the minute and have to live with this record. Some won’t get the chance to put it right either

Root is a better spinner he should be told he will be our main spinner
Better than he thinks, yes, but arguably not better than a strike spinner, though I think we both agree that ‘who’ that is remains unknown. I’ve mentioned on here before that converting Moeen Ali from a promising batsman into a stop gap spinner, and then relying on him as a strike spinner, was a bad move, and one that probably led to the current situation. It just sends out the wrong signals to spinners in the County game, in my humble.

We all new we were going to get beat the predictions were 5-0 I went for 4-1 so not a shock we 3 down think it’s more to do with the performances and if you look at it with no practice in a bubble it was always going to be tough. Where as the Aussies in there summer there players have had plenty of preparation plus they have far better Bowlers than us.
