Probably. He‘s said he’ll still make himself available for the Proteas in shorter formats. Started the year captaining the Test side as well.
Series are done in a couple of weeks though, leaving him 40 weeks to pick and choose his franchises and set his fees.

i fear test cricket will be a thing of the past if nothing is done by the people that love the game
ODI and 20/20 white ball cricket is now the main sport of cricket players want big money for quick cricket all year round and greed has taken over

if 5 a-side football took off big time with the players you think all the football governing bodies would let it happen ?
something has to be done right now and change how cricket is being run and played. proper cricket is test cricket end of story. it has to come first with county cricket being the base for talent to be grown and learn the trade

revamp county cricket and 4 day cricket bring it back to main stream free to air tv. play day night games that also have something on it like bonus points for wickets and runs so players and fans can get right into it
even have a combi day with a 20/20 game as part of the fixture

but please don't let test cricket fade away
In England, there needs to be a rapprochement between the ECB and the Counties if that’s to happen, but one can’t help conclude that the ECB might have already determined that Test cricket is inexorably dying and has positioned ODI, T20, and the Hundred as its heirs. A slow but painful death then awaits. Perhaps I’m being overly pessimistic, but unless we see major reconstruction in the next 24 months, then perhaps I’m not.

Quinton de Kock (29) has announced he’s retiring from Test cricket with immediate effect.

Yep a lot of players will fuck of test cricket 29 is no age for retiring from test cricket! He could play another 10 years playing 20/20 1 day games!

Am just surprised England test players don’t retire at a similar age?! It’s relentless the amount of test matches England play in a year, In know it was me I’d piss it of for 20/20 ipl cricket where it’s a 4 hour game.

It’s to late Test match cricket is dying! England haven’t took it seriously for the last 6 years why should players.

spot on
its got to happen right now and the ECB need to show they want test cricket at the top table and promote and build a new system. i don't see how the ECB can let this go on any longer without major changes ? we are all ready calling for a new coach and captain and players at test levels because this lot are hopeless

i can see a major challenge to the ECB if nothing is done then somebody will try and build a new governing body with a major money backer to take over ? test cricket is far to good just to rip it up and bin it

Test Cricket has always been elitist, only a few national teams get a play it, and the format will never grow that way.

Lot of new countries have emerged through the T20 format, with new teams breaking through and beating established associate teams.

With players contracted to 5 teams in a year, Test will go the way of List A and CC cricket. It isn't just the ECBs fault it is the public who no longer watch cricket matched which last over 2hrs 45 minutes at any level bar England.

Just checked and the IPL runs from April 2nd through June 3rd next year, and England play the final day of their third Test in the West Indies on March 28th and the first day of the first Test against New Zealand is June 2nd. How could Stokes, for example, captain England and still play in the IPL?

The three Tests in the Caribbean really are back-to-back, so I wouldn’t be at all surprised if we saw more players making similar decisions in the coming months.

so true but can the players really live without test cricket the ECB are to blame 100%
bringing in yes men and do as your told can only last so long before they get outed and people start to ask the questions. so so many ex-players and pundits are not happy and it has to filter down to the ECB door

i can see a revolution and one or two ex-players kicking the door down in the ECB boardroom and kicking out the deadwood on the board ? light the fire and wait for the black smoke to turn white and rise a new head

they will never learn until its to late ? once you start to miss it and players missing out on the ashes you will soon see a change back ? the honours board at lords and other major grounds will be what they will miss ? having your name up on the board forever should mean more than money well it would for me

Is that realistic? It’s hugely popular with those of us who have grown up watching and appreciating it, but it’s sadly no longer the pinnacle for many players. As I say, the decisions taken in the next two years will be telling.

The next T20 World Cup is in Australia next Oct-Nov, and then the next ODI World Cup is in India in Oct-Nov 2023, so it’s hard to see the ECB switching emphasis.

Aussies and India be winning all the test matches England winning a few but because of the size of ground in England and cricket fans love a day out with the mates and a piss up it will mostly sellout!

Remember when shy first had the away test matches in India packed to the rafters now they’ll be a few thousand there.

Be interesting where test match cricket will be in the next 10 years.
