Brilliant that from Mikey Holding, proper analysis of Hales, you just dont get anything like that in football, cricket commentators shit all over football from a great height, different sports I know but there is no reason why football pundits cant actually offer some insight like that after the game, just too thick and too bitter, thus spending their time spitting bile to offer anything worthwhile. Imagine Rio Ferdinand trying to do something like that.

Insane to not put Pakistan back in. Totally insane.
Today will give the best swing conditions and to knock 2 or 3 over before the close of play with 2 days left would virtually win the game.
Can't understand it. 390 was more than enough of a lead. Plus, the two main strike bowlers (Broad and Anderson) haven't been overbowled, therefore shouldn't need a rest. Baffling.

Agreed, it always baffles me. The cricket commentating and punditry is fascinating to watch. Half the time during a game I will potter about but as soon as they're doing an analysis or talking I will sit and watch intently. Football is just embarrassing but I suppose it's the difference in the people that play the sports.

From having no hope and being completely down and out, cook has given pakistan a glimmer of hope for a draw, england would still win this but when you have a team completely down and out why give them a chance? poor decision but i guess this was more baylis than cook's decision, as australia rarely enforce the follow on

I love listening to the cricket commentators, Bumble, Nick Knight - hell, they're all good.

Footballing commentators are just generally filled with hate, bias and bile. Not to mention, a bit fucking stupid.

Totally, you have Bumble for his humour and light hearted moments, Nasser and Atherton for in depth analysis of tactics and batting, Beefy and Gower as legends, Mikey Holding for his dulcet tones and knowledge of fast bowling, Warne for his knowledge of spin. They just cover all the bases. The radio is just as good, some really good commentators who all make it feel so natural and like they are sitting in the living room/car with you chatting about the game. Its just a totally different world from the football commentators.

Absolutely, mate. And high praise and respect for the opposition regardless of the result.

They love their sport and profession as commentators.

You only had to listen to the wank-hammers on BT during/after our game with Bayern the other evening - pitiful and embarrassing analysis.

Having just read the Guardian Ball by Ball I was thinking that the journalists who do that are also light years away from their counterparts who do the football 'as it happens' . Then I read the Telegraph equivalent, done by two glorified office boys, full of unnecessary exclamation remarks about the rain!!! and pathetic attempts at humour and finally finishing 'Ta-ra for now'.

At least there was none of the tribalism that the football hacks try to interject into their dumbed down efforts at journalism.

There was a woman commentating on Radio 5 yesterday and although it was strange to hear a female commentator (commentatrix?) she knew her subject far better than the likes of Ferdinand Mills and the others know football.

Not just those that you've mentioned but also throughout their entire cricket coverage. Rob Key and Mark Butcher are brilliant, Ian Ward is a great interviewer and generally the people they have on the verdict or any other cricket show is top notch. There's not really a bad one.

On the radio Blowers has lost it (never had it) but his voice alone is worth a listen. Tuffers I find a bit annoying but most of them are great. I even enjoy listening to the ladies of TMS!

Some of the stuff they do at lunch times are brilliant as well, like the thing about the 81 tour of the Windies they have done this year, just brilliant has me glued to it rather than getting my own lunch, it shows that Sky can do it, there is no excuse for the football in reality.

Alison Mitchell - She's brilliant.

Alison Mitchell knows her stuff and holds her own in the TMS box in the banter stakes.

Yup. it's comprehensive, reasoned, but importantly, it is fair and balanced.

Agreed, I was limiting my comments to those doing this test, Nick Knight, Robert Croft, all the overseas commentators they get in depending on the opponents like Rambo, Ramez Raja in this series, there really isnt a bad one.

Blowers is a bit of an institution and a figure of fun, but when he isnt hamming it up for the audience and going on about buses and the like, he is very knowledgeable about the game. Those not mentioned yet on the radio such as Vaughan, Aggers, Vic Marks, Jim Maxwell, Geoffrey, Swanny, Alec Stewart, Pat Murphy, Simon Mann, Ed Smith are all simply light years away from the likes of Collymoron, Matterface, Alan Green, Saggers who do football matches on the radio.

Question is, do Sky think football fans are too thick to cope with in depth analysis or are the pundits too thick to give this analysis? Neville gives the slightest bit of insight and people think he's great not because he is, but because he's the only one who scratches the surface. They could go a lot further but dumb everything down.

What a great question that is. I'd guess at a bit of both.

Its an interesting debate of football and cricket analysis, and nothing beats sky in terms of cricket coverage. Absolutely no match at all, proper cricket analysis is only found in test matches, and i think it has more to do with the fact the amount is very much limited as compared to football and they have more time to analyse different aspects. Football analysis is very much like how they would analyse a t20 match i think or 50 over odi at best

any chances of rain today in manchester? :) would be interesting if match goes into day 5 with Pakistan having a realistic shot at draw :) Cook decision was pretty poor by all accounts

I think you are being far too generous to the football analysis that we are subjected to mate. There is no excuse for the shit football trots out after the game is over when they have all the time in the world, where we are subjected to juvenile comments and point scoring rather than anything meaningful, Mikey Holding didnt make them stop the test while he showed us about how Hales was battling with his technique.

Weather forecast in Manchester looks ok if you are an Englishman, not so sorry to tell you ;-)

I think it also have to do with the fact that there are so many football matches and they are least bothered to go into depth unless its MNF where they atleast make a try, Is weather forecast always accurate or are there occasions where it can be misleading for a city like manchester? :)
