Confidence wasn’t helped by the ludicrous decision to strip him of the vice-captaincy. If you know your captain is a physical liability, which Stokes historically has been, then you are invariably going to need two vice-captains, one who can deputise the other when the actual captain is out. It’s a small point, granted, but it seemed illogical and unnecessary when it happened.

Pope is a good player but not a three and needs to go back to four for Surrey; seasons have been wasted pursuing this failed experiment. He might be offered up now as the sacrifice for events so far, but it would be misguided to think he alone is responsible, or even irresponsible…

That would also destroy Smith’s confidence, too. They’ll probably bring Bethell in now, who scored Lions runs but in another losing side, and the media will elevate any of his positives to the highest. However, his inexperience and lack of ‘proper’ cricket will mean it’ll be another case of peaks and troughs.

At the Championship level, there needs to be a re-think about how infrequently players are turning out in the longer format, instead trotting out for an endless succession of one-day and 20-20 tournaments. It’s little wonder that they then don’t have the aptitude or patience to stick it out consistently in Ashes conditions.

I think this Ashes tour has sunk in for many england fans (barmy army) going over for the Ashes, that they are being mugged off. The Next time in 4 years could see fans stay at home because they are taken for granted and used. TNT have shown many fans with heads in their hands and others are angry ? Also think county cricket needs a massive shake up! Just have it for test team players! I’d go the other way when some say it should be one league not two! I’d make it 3 leagues of 6 means less games! Also the pitches should be prepared to the instructions of ECB!

Wonder if it is possible to say to players that they can choose to play first class cricket or T20, but not both.

The home run hitters would earn big bucks in T20 franchise cricket, but the vast majority won’t get to play international franchise tournaments and so would be better off trying to play test cricket and get the central contracts from the ECB.

Then the non-T20 players would have to develop a technique suited for test cricket.

Probably not feasible, but it’d maybe sort a bit of the problem.

How about having winter batting and bowling training on pitches around the world too?

We grow up on wickets that do more than most, meaning we need less skill to take wickets. Get our youngsters used to bowling on bouncy wickets and dust bowls.

These countries have to allow it but any idea is a good idea

It doesn't matter what the Counties do, it's the selection policy, the style of cricket played, and test player's not playing enough red ball cricket.

Look at the lad Bethell who might get called up, a first class average of 27, and has never scored a first class century, he hardly played any red ball cricket last season. The Aussies must be pissing themselves laughing at such an amateurish shambles.

Bazball has killed the English game at test level, Quick smash and swing from the hips cricket doesn't win you test series. It may win 1 out of 10 games, which would be against a lesser team or a team 3.0 up and playing dead rubbers

There needs to be an incentive though. Most kids these days would rather tour the world earning megabucks playing rounders than developing the ability to bat long or bowling spell strategies.

I genuinely believe that the current regime wouldn't pick Boycott, Atherton or Cook if they were playing now. They wouldn't fit with the "style" that England play. Or should I say attempt to play.
