Cricket Thread

Probably slightly more accurate.

You can see why rest cricket is dead over there. 550 plays 600 and everyone goes home.
Most of the cricket playing world, or at least the paying plebs, seem to have given up on the five day game. India, Pakistan and the Windies get poor crowds now for test cricket. Only Australia, England and South Africa (?) are holding steady with attendances. And I've seen some poor attendances in Aus.

What a day for England and the legend Root bat for 2 sessions tomorrow we might be in front by 150/200
That’s the only possible way to a result. Eng lead 200, cracks appear in the pitch and Eng spinners make hay. Maybe, maybe.

It’ll decline here too if prices keep rising.

Well; we got it. Not quite in a session, mind! Congratulations to Root, he's been a fantastic player for us. Pity the captaincy didn't work out for him in the end. But it's not an easy role to fulfill.

I know, it's been pedestrian hasn't it! It's an absolute road, but I take nothing away from Root and it's been a joy to watch him over the past 12 or so years. An outstanding player, deserving of the record. He can score everywhere, can bat quickly as a result or can dig in. A classic player and one of the greatest ever worldwide, alongside being England's best.

It wasn't easy when he was captain. I think there was far too much pressure on the team in general in the pursuit of success. Too much chopping and changing which led to significant pressure to perform. Baz and Stokes have kept it simple and given the players the faith that one bad innings will not cost them, as well as stripping things back and telling them to be aggressive rather than passive. Under Root we'd often stay in for a while but barely score whereas now we can accumulate quickly and don't get bogged down too much.

What was refreshing today, in particular, is we didn't play silly shots when Pakistan covered the boundaries. We just rotated the strike and kept the scoreboard ticking. Particularly positive in relation to Brook, who also batted superbly.

Whilst still scoring 400 in a day.

The crazy thing about this pitch is that we need to do the same again tomorrow for there to be any chance of us winning.

Yeah I don't think we can really step on the gas at any point. Ideally you have a 250-300 lead and an hour bowling tomorrow before stumps. But I think you have to follow today's strategy and see where you end up. I can't back this up with stats but I feel like Root doesn't generally come back and resume an innings very well. He is so busy in the crease it's a mammoth effort so it's probably unrealistic to think he will be there long tomorrow. We will see.

And we will want Smith, Woakes and Atkinson to bat without pressure. They're capable of having a swing of course, but equally could collapse fairly quickly. If Stokes was there for Carse I would be more hopeful we could pull off a win.

Taking 10 wickets in a day is going to be incredibly difficult.
