I think it is possible for somebody with a bit of guile to take advantage of the short ball... we've just not really seen it up to now.

I'm not sure it is. What we're seeing in this Test is quite unusual and players these days are not used to facing this on a repeated and prolonged basis. When you couple that with their overall strategies (attacking everything in England's case), it's hard to imagine anyone playing it with guile.
