Why do the English batsmen especially Crawley feel compelled to take a swing at short and wide deliveries?

One of these need to get the Majority of the runs because not expecting Stokes to get big runs this innings, law of averages an all that..

We don’t necessarily need anybody to be getting centuries, just 2 or 3 with a half-decent knock should see us over the line.

Dare I say Crawley looks like being one of them, he’s batted well so far…
