My understanding is that the ball has to be in his hand when he removes the bails. I don't think it has to be the ball that actually makes contact with the bails (the keeper's glove is okay?), but the ball has to be in that hand, not the other hand.

If the wicket is broken before the ball is in hand (this includes an overthrow scenario where the first throw hits the stumps), then a stump should be removed with the hand(s) holding the ball.

I've missed all this! Just caught the multishot angle they'd put together. Am I right that they couldn't tell quickly whether both bails were off before the batsmen made his ground? And that Bairstow had knocked one bail off before the ball arrived?

Pretty much. The third umpire was looking to see when the second bail was removed but Smith looked in to me, just.
