Fair enough.

I can just about remember Sobers playing against England; it must have been the 1974 tour, and he was well past his best then.

I remember my Dad telling me that he could bowl as a pace bowler, a swing bowler and as a spinner.

He must have been some bloody cricketer in his prime.

He had the highest test score for over 35 years, and only 5 innings (including the SA one this month) have surpassed it in over 65.

I've probably forgotten a load of Indian, Sri Lankan, Australian etc players.

Kapil Dev and Richard Hadlee were far better bowlers, not as good with the bat.

My dad would want Keith Miller (Aus) to be considered.

I think those three would be ahead of Imran. The top 2 are miles ahead.

pitches, equipment, ease of travel... there's pros and cons for each.

Kallis only averaged below 50 against Australia, England and Sri Lanka.

The one statistic that I remember about Gary Sobers was the 6x6 ( ie 36 runs in a 6 ball over ) when he was playing for Nottinghamshire @. 1969.

Sobers would have come up against Lillee and Thompson two of the greatest fast bowlers of all time - in their pomp.

John Snow was more than decent too, and there were other top quality bowlers around then, though admittedly, he didn’t have to face Lance Gibbs, one of the all-time great spin bowlers.

I consider the West Indies quartet of Roberts, Holding, Garner and Marshall as the greatest set of bowlers. How many wickets would these four have taken, if they played the number of tests that we see nowadays?

Sobers hardly played an ODI, so as someone else said, it’s impossible to compare cricketers from different eras.

Seem to remember it was against Glamorgan and Malcolm Nash? Wasn’t there a big debate about whether the 4th or 5th had gone for 6 or been caught?
