England’s Test schedule is pencilled in thus, with the blue representing tours and the green representing home Tests :

India 5 Tests Jan-March 2024
West Indies 3 Tests July 2024
Sri Lanka 3 Tests Aug-Sep 2024

Pakistan 3 Tests October 2024
New Zealand 3 Tests Nov-Dec 2024

India 5 Tests June-Aug 2025
Australia Nov-Jan 2025-26

I can foresee the tour to India being a bit ‘experimental’ but thereafter the side should take shape and build toward the tour of Australia, following which McCullum’s contract will either be up or renewed.

2025 looks like a fun year!

Sending an experimental side to India is a bit risky - a long tour in difficult conditions - but it looks likely to be the way. Difficult to know without seeing which bowlers want to go.

I think the summer next year might see one or two newcomers in each series - England should be strong favourites against both, maybe depends on how many are in the one day world cup beforehand (if any).

2025 should prove a stiff challenge.

It’s hard to see Anderson, Woakes and Wood all traveling to India, who will make it doubly difficult with their pitches, so whoever goes it will be unfair to judge them on the basis of that one tour. However, if England can identify a couple of new bowlers by the end of next summer, then they can protect them through the next winter and summer with central contracts. I think they need to accept that certain players are just not going to be fit enough to be relied upon, especially in 5 Test series, so that hangs question marks over Stokes, Woakes, Wood, Archer, and Mahmood.

I’ll be intrigued to see how England do that. I think that a fair number of the current squad have probably gone over the hill, but sentimentality and the desire to keep a good team spirit will likely see many of them retained. That’s now two home Ashes series where England have failed to win, and they‘ll now need to work on building a bowling unit for the next trip to Australia.
Let’s take a look at the batting order first.
Seems to be settling and I’d give the Duckett/Crawley more time.
Bairstow, Stokes, Brook and Root are major talents. It’s who bats at 3 for me.
We need a proper Keeper -Foakes is the obvious choice but James Rew at Somerset is one to watch.
Bowling is where major surgery is required. Hopefully take Rehan Ahmed to India and possibly Will Jacks.
Sam Cook, Brydon Carse and Matt Potts may feature in the near future.
Finally it would be great if batters like Haines, Hain, Jaime Smith and Bell develop

Just switched on the hundred not watched it before, not sure I see the point it's just like T20 with teams with stupid American style names . Apparently an over is a set!!! Of 5 or 10 balls . Bright childish graphics on the TV screen & if I make it to the change over I can listen to some shite DJ / musician . Guess it's official I am a grumpy old git :)

Pope will come back into the side and bat at 3.

I expect James Rew and Jamie Smith to play for England soon.

Looking ahead to the next Ashes, it’s our bowling where we will see significant changes.

Broad and Moeen have retired, with Anderson soon to follow. Wood will be 35. Woakes is a year older and very much a home bowler anyway.

Come the first Ashes test in 2025, it is entirely conceivable our batting line-up will be exactly the same (Crawley, Duckett, Pope, Root, Brook, Stokes), yet our bowling attack could be completely different.

That assumes Bairstow keeps wicket or doesn’t play ? Either way it’s a hard shout as he is a quality batsman but not Test quality Keeper.
Yes you’d imagine wholesale bowling changes soon. I get the love for Jimmy but sentiment is not good for forging a 2025 side to retain the Ashes.

The opening pair are sound and you haven’t included Pope, though I remain unconvinced that he is a natural 3. I actually think that Stokes would be better going in at 3, especially as he can seemingly no longer be relied upon to bowl. Alternatively, and this is a bit of a wildcard, Sam Curran looks increasingly like someone who could bat much higher up the order. They resisted the urge to recall Foakes and his batting style might be too conventional for what England demand, so he may not be in the party that tours India. In that regard, England might prefer instead to include Jamie Smith and/or James Rew and persist with the policy of batsmen who can keep. Ahmed and Jacks toured last winter but were then overlooked this summer for Ali, which I wasn’t in favour of, but then that is emblematic of the management’s preference for experience. As for the pace bowling, the names you suggest are all possibles (add Atkinson, too) and that is indeed where major surgery is required, but the management will either slap a bandage on and show continued loyalty to the old guard or staple younger players in willy-nilly; one might take but most will end up on the floor. After another failed Ashes series, I’m still unsure that there is any coherent plan for the bowling unit.

Agree with your sentiments entirely there brother Gabriel :-)

Likewise.

Been going 3 years. Unlike 20/20 it seems no other **** around the world wants to play this format.

Seems aimed at Kidz with ADHD.

Can't think why , maybe it would suit our American friends
The Americans now have their own T20 tournament and will host some of the World Cup next year. Huge subcontinent diaspora to support it and backing from existing IPL and Australian franchises.

Pretty much nailed it there. I've not heard of it being played anywhere else. Unlike the T20 stuff, which is just about everywhere that has a decent standard of cricket. Whoever devised it needs shooting.

Yes have seen that 6 teams in 2 stadiums , if they want to appeal to more than traditional cricket supporting communities this version may well suit

The Hundred is an abomination. The normal ODI stuff, and the domestic 20 and 50 over stuff, I can live with.
I don’t see the point of this ‘Hundred’ competition. No different to the T20 bash, apart from the extra balls. Manchester Originals, Trent Rockets etc…fuck off. It should be counties at least.

I'm guessing....
