Criticism of Pep

I think that’s unfair. He’s an honest guy if not always right.

I don't think it's unfair I think he has behaved badly and I wont excuse that, he's an intelligent bloke and IMO he needs reminding he's an employee of the club. Saying that, the older you get the less of a fanboy you become (And I don't mean that unkindly).

I’d love to be a fanboy again. Too busy teaching my daughter to sing City songs in the bath though.

This is true but they do push “Fight to the end” They could do so much more with our story though.
They could do worse than give Gary James a six-month consultancy to review all our marketing initiatives. He is the man who has all the killer facts on our history and fanbase which we never seem to use as a club but would hugely improve our reputation. Hi Gary, if you get the Gig I am happy to take a small commission fee! The fact that we won a major European trophy before Barca, Bayern, and Liverpool should be sung from the rooftops.

Brilliant bud ;)
Every time there's a birth in my house or even in my neighbourhood vicinity a City shirt gets bought and given as a present, it doesn't matter if the parents have other teams in mind, I like to get City in there first.

What Pep should be doing is playing mind games with his opponents, not with Citys own fans.
To be fair he was taking the pis* when talking about the RAGS, his attempts to keep a straight face when saying it were admirable.

Haha a few weeks ago I met the 16 year old son of one of my best mates who had emigrated to Switzerland with his family years ago. They were back over here for a bit of a meet up.I said to his son Jacob “who do you support then?” “CIty of course” he said looking at me puzzled. “Why’s that then?” I asked. “Because on the day I was born you enrolled me into the Junior Blues” I’d forgotten that. Worked though!

I do wonder who is briefing Pep though before these press conferences. He knew the crowd question was coming. Imagine if he had just said: "I will never criticise the loyalty of our fans. They have followed this team through thick and thin for decades. We have sold more than 100,000 tickets in the last week for our games against Real Madrid and United. That's a fantastic commitment from people so soon after Christmas." Then he could have added (as he did): "In any case I didn't know it was on free-to-air televison."

I think MCFC do have a lot of dedicated staff who are committed and work hard. Many of these truly understand the club and it’s fans BUT I’m not entirely convinced everyone at the club recognises what makes MCFC special or our history. The narrative of failed 3rd tier club that was bought and found success - and is therefore being turned into a giant - totally downplays our history, heritage and individuality and helps those who want to ridicule us.

We need to boast of our history and achievements. We have so many records and stories to tell. Prior to 1998 MCFC had played more top flight games than MUFC (for example) - on its own it’s a so-what but used properly it is part of that story that says we WERE a major club that hit bad times in 80s and late 90s BUT that’s only a small part of our 125+ year story. Failure happens to all clubs at some point but genuine trophy success happens to a few - ours started in 1904 BEFORE most of our present day rivals. In the 1910s, 1920s, 1930s we created records and successes that many of those rivals have still not matched; the 49s/50s saw Trautmann - what a forgiving and wonderful set of fans achieved has to be remembered; in 1960s/70s we eclipsed most of our current rivals and also won a major UEFA trophy BEFORE LFC and Pep’s beloved Barca, yet we have ‘no European history’ until now (tell Book, Corrigan and Lee that!). I could go on but the point is it is time we boasted of our achievements. 39,000 is greater than the average attendance MUFC had for at least 55 seasons - again it means little on its own but wouldn’t it be great if stats and evidence were used when Pep’s asked a question.

We have so much we could boast about - genuine success and achievements over more than a century - yet the narrative is that we are a 3rd tier club who got lucky with plastic fans. We must stop this.

Totally agree Gary.

We've had higher attendances than Liverpool for most of the last decade, yet the narrative is that we're terrible fans who never attend and they're the best fans in the world. It sucks.

I totally understand the over-arching PR strategy is to promote Abu Dhabi. I've not problem with that. But the club really needs to up it's game in defending the football club and its fans from the false media narrative that has gotten completely out of hand.
