Crystal Palace (H) Post Match Thread

This is a side that won 100 points last season.

It underperformed yesterday because we started without the entire 1st choice midfield (KDB, David Silva and Fernandinho) and Aguero is short of match fitness.

Yes we need a left back - but we coped last season without one.

Pep was looking ahead yesterday and he might have been right to do so. Palace had one those days when they clicked and everything they did worked out and we weren't strong enough to turn events around.

We're a better side than Liverpool but they are playing to their max at the moment whilst we have injury problems and are playing below our maximum. Next few games are critical. We can get blown out of the title race, or we can regroup and stay in there.

If I were Pep I would promote Foden in place of Gundogan, and retain Sterling ahead of Mahrez. We're not getting enough out of Mahrez. Every time the ball goes wide to him, it comes back inside every single time. Fine when you're winning, you can probe away until you find weakness, but when chasing a game you need players to take responsibility. If he's not able to take his man on one on one when he's playing wide right then there's no point him playing there. Give me Sterling every single time.

Sterling in now my favourite player. I love his heart. He's doing for City what KDB does. He takes responsibility and drives at the opposition.

We just need to dig in now, stay with Liverpool for the next few weeks and then we'll start to erode their lead. The four point deficit has put us under pressure at a moment when we are not at our maximum and now we face some difficult games. Come through this period, and we'll probably win the title as we have the best squad, but a couple of bad results and we could be out of it.

The general trend of us becoming more 'open' has coincided with the chopping and changing of CB partnerships. Bottom line is that Stones/Laporte need to be installed again and not moved from those positions.

The tempo yesterday from minute 1 was really poor and that's almost entirely down to having a CB at DM and Otamendi behind him. All our creative problems stem from that and ultimately IMO that's why we lost. You can't take as long as we were taking to move the ball from back to front and expect to open up a low block like that. Transitions were almost non existent - I don't think our forwards got behind their "midfield" line more than once or twice.

We're a team truly built to play a system, which is what makes yesterday and Pep's hand in it all the more baffling. I think he thought the could get away with it and rest some lads with two big aways coming up. But he's come up short and it feels like the pressure is on.

Merry Christmas Blues!

its amazing what one defeat does, and the cityitis comes back with a vengeance

take our chances and we win both away games. the big test is liverpool

for league and champions league, stones and laporte without exception at the back, hopefully we will have ferna and merlin back to give us the control back

1st goal -Ederson was in the right position for a goalkeeper as you are always taught to cover the near post so the only place it can go is in the far corner. 9 out of 10 times the ball will go wide. Terrible defending before the goal is where the criticism should be.

2nd goal - awful clearance from a cheap free kick, just poor, no excuses for a league championship team to defend like that.

3rd goal - watch Walker do a ridiculous skip style move before he dives in. If he just played the game as he should he gets to the ball first and clears it without giving a very very poor penalty.

Subs - should have made them at half time and changed the formation completely. Pep gets paid 15 million a year to make the big calls. That wasn’t a big call just plainly obvious.

Off to Leicester on Boxing Day and if we play like that it won’t be a happy trip home.....

Yes, Pep thought he needed to refuel and regroup and get David, KDB etc fully recharged and fit and the result was the team we had out on the pitch wasn't good enough to deal with the shocks we had. Stones in central midfield alongside Gundogan was not going to work. Foden would have been better. Palace were always going to play very deep and everyone knows that they outstandingly quick fullbacks who would make life difficult for Sane and Sterling so really I think Pep gambled and lost.

A mistake a wonder goal a penalty and very good defending by palace. Think Pep trying to manage the team in this buzy peroid but with walker who needs a rest and Delph who isnt a left back it will eventually bite you on your butt.

Still a long way to go lets just win our next game and move in from this game.
It may have been an idea to start Stones in his correct position and moved Delph further forward....

We don't have a left back. Zinchenko is more a left sided midfielder than a full back.

He has played there a few times this season and last, not the best position for him but him playing there would allow Delph to do the midfield role which was more crucial.

We don’t have a right back.

its the morning after the nightmare and i have cooled down and taken stock

am not going to dig anybody out and call the manager or blame the weather or the tea lady ?? but it was just one of them days that you know we have in us from time to time, well played to palace and a couple of cracking goals and they held there nerve and won, and we have to learn that nobody but nobody has the divine right to the points even at home you have to fight for them and if you lose hold your hands up and say well played to the other team

i have a feel that it will be good in the long run and a lesson learnt and maybe we have got a bit big headed in thinking teams have roll over, and we can play a weaken team and play players out of there roles when teams like palace turn up, but from now on we must go full team 100% guns out and if your fit you play no resting players for the so called bigger games its half of the season 20 games left we must give it our all

liverpool will lose and drop points and maybe now its on them the pressure and they will start to think we have won the league all ready them loony fans will start the song (were gonna win the league) again and players will start to think that way and we all know what happened to stevie G

Pep got the team wrong. John Stones isn’t a midfielder, full stop... Bernardo and Gundogan aren’t strikers so why were they just stood still up front all first half? Fucking garbage from Pep and the pair of them... Had someone taken the batteries out of us first half?.. Walker had the worst game I’ve seen a City player have since Mangala against Wolves in the League Cup last season that saw him out of the team for good... Some of the ridiculous diving in defending was amateur... Why the fuck did Pep take Sterling off? Stupid decision!..

Good effort by the lads second half but that was a bad day at the office for Pep and a few of the players.

Time for Danilo to have a run in the side. Walker has been poor for a good while now and yesterday was the nail in his starting coffin for a bit, abomination of a performance.
Pep got it wrong? He’s trying to manage the squad over a busy, important time. The team he put out should have been good enough but Walker had a mare after 30 minutes, responsible for not getting tight enough for the first and giving away a needless penalty sandwiched between Townsend’s fantastic strike. One of those days but everyone makes mistakes, we move on and we now need a big show of balls, it’s a test but we have the personnel to do it.

Yeah i agree. Any change looks like a mistake with hindsight, If you lose. But Guardiola has to keep the team fresh, and the players we had were more than good enough to best Palace. A bad day.

Everyone needs to move on. I hope the players don't dwell on it. Move on and get 3 points in the next match and then the subsequent one. We need to get to the Liverpool clash with a 1-4 point deficet.

I’ve posted before but one of my favourite sayings I heard on the radio many years ago:

“there’s no clearer form of vision than 20/20 hindsight”

It’s so true and as you say, we move on.

Challenging for 4 trophies will always open you up to injury and fatigue. Both Chelsea and City lost winnable games yesterday after playing in the League Cup midweek. Yes Leicester also played but they haven't had to also play in Europe in recent weeks. A 2 legged semifinal against Burton plus a final (presumably)are 3 more matches than we have play more than Liverpool. Add to that the PL game that will have to be moved out to accommodate the League Cup final. Mind you, by then, the Champions League will be back in full swing.

It's all good and well to be competing on all fronts but there is a reason no one has ever done it before. It doesn't matter whether you're playing Burton or Schalke. Minutes on the legs are minutes on the legs. Liverpool are already benefitting from an early League Cup exit. If I were Klopp I'd also "throw" the FA Cup tie against Wolves and just play the kids. City will definitely recover from this blip but Liverpool will be pushing us all the way.

Clearly Walker had a poor game although in the first half he played a number of great balls over to the left wing one of which led to our first goal. For their first goal there were a couple of poor attempts to clear the ball before it eventually came anywhere near the Palace player that Walker was marking. The second goal was a comedy of errors before the great strike.

What gave me a headache was the continual shouting out against Walker who was getting blamed for absolutely everything that happened well before half time from some around me. Rather than getting new players I would happily make a small contribution to the club for them to buy some new "fans".
