Cutting bread: horizontal or diagonal?

I think it's a french thing. Cutting a baguette like this will give you just enough bread for a sandwich.

Diagonal if you're going to put pâté on slices of baguette or something, go diagonal, but if you're making a sandwich from a baguette horizontal is the only way forward. Only the froggy bastards would go against that. #frenchsurrendermonkeys

Though i was brought up horizontally I saw the light many years ago.
Diagonal is a much better crust to soft bread ratio. Especially so when toasted.

I think you will find the surface area of a sandwich is the same regardless of how it is cut.

Edit: I think you will find the surface area of a buttie is the same regardless of how it is cut.
