Cycling Advice

I’m thinking of getting a bike. Not cycled since my mid/late teens but with current situation I think it’s more attractive than the metro. I’m relatively fit as I run regularly. Want something that will allow me to cycle from Sale to Mcr once or twice a week along the canal towpath. (About 8.5 km : 5 ish miles). How much should I be looking to pay / what sort of bike?

Generally get what you pay for mate. I'd be looking to spend at least a grand on a decent gravel bike. They're like a road bike but with kinder ride position and wider go-anywhere tyres. Ideal for gravel tracks hence the name. See if work can join a cycle to work scheme and you'll get one tax free!

£500 for new in my opinion is absolute minimum for a first bike. I'd go to a few local bike shops (independents) and just tell them where you want to ride, they'll advise you. You'll make a saving over Met prices pretty quickly so go as high as you dare and add a bit more!

The cycle to work scheme is okay but doesn't necessarily save you much, in fact it CAN be more expensive. The cycle stores might only allow CTW on full price bikes so takes out the discounted older models on sale. Also, the company you work for own the bike, not you, and they can decide to charge a transfer fee at the end of the period. I only ended up with a saving of £10 overall which was crap, but got lucky at the shop at the outset because I managed to bag a sale bike before I told them I was buying on CTW, but they let me have it anyway.

29 miles this evening between 5-7 o’clock, bloody boiling and went through almost 2 litres of drink plus a protein shake.
Went through Heywood and up the hill in Ashy Valley!! Some climb that one, one lad who was already there fell over twice as I was riding up behind him lol, steep isn’t the word!!

Back from a century ride today. Mainly vanity miles on Cheshire lanes down to Crewe and back. Only 3.5k feet climbing in 103 miles from Prestwich. Been really enjoyable cycling through the lockdown but today kind of felt like it was over. Sadly.
Love those "vanity" miles! Endless hours of flat as pancake stuff around Siddington, Joddrell Bank, Cranage etc. I guess your hardest bit was getting through Cheetham Hill safely :-)

Not touched the bike this week but managed 2500 metres of open water swim yesterday. Fucked! But felt great getting in to the cool water after such a stiflingly hot day.

I used to ride with / for ABC Centreville a very long time ago. Time trails Thursday evenings around Birch Services. Nigel Bishop was just joining the pro ranks when I joined ABC. Left them after an altercation - a group of older, experienced riders treated my brother like shit on a ride and left him. And it was a ride where it was agreed nobody would be dropped. He was only 15 and left to cycle miles on unknown roads a long way from home. My dad took him to the next club night meeting and asked to see who had left him on the ride. Much muttering and bowing of heads. Our kid pointed out two of the shithouses who'd left him. My dad did the rest...

I'd suggest a flat bar hybrid. You pay more for a drop bar bike and unless you know you want one you are better of with a flat bar. Between £500 - £800. Hydraulic disc brakes a minimum and you should find them no problem with that budget.
