Cycling Advice

Cheers for that mate, will take a look at that. To be fair, the bike has been sat in the garage for 6 years and not moved till last month when I just took it straight out on the road. I am hoping this government scheme comes in for the free voucher so my local shop can give it a once over and tune up haha.

Going to give it a wash today and apply some lube then ill try take it for a spin and see if the noise has gone.
Probably 6 years worth of gummed up cables not helping the matter.

Stick your bike in the big cog at the rear, then with the wheels stationary select the little cog on the shifters. This should make your gear cable go slack. You should then be able to remove the cable outers from the frame lugs and slide them out of the way so that you can clean and re-lube the inners. Give everything a good wipe down and liberally lubricate with a silicone based bike lube. Clean any crap out of the frame lugs and pop the outers back in place. Re-select your big cog on the shifter ensuring the cable inners a free to move and don't get snagged. Should be like new.

Any sign of corrosion when you inspect the cables then it is probably time for a new inner cable (around £5.00).

Might have to read that a few times before I grasp what your saying lol, any link to a youtube video?

However, just washed down the bike and relubed the chain. Took it out for a quick spin down my road and its silky smooth with no noises (compared to before!) so I think the lube is what was needed.

I ended up using the c3 ceramic wet, ill see how that lasts me and then I can switch it. I think if I would have used some peanut butter it would have been better than how dry it was before!

I will still pick up some degreaser and do a full take apart and clean one day but for now its looking all good.

Thanks again all for the advice, will feel and hear how the bike is tomorrow before I will know if I need to do anymore!

About 48 second into this video: It's a 2 minute job, and it can have a huge impact on the efficiency of you gear shifting.

Just be wary that wet lube attracts crap whilst cycling but doesn't wash away as easy.

I find GCN to be a good source of "How to" articles if you need any help with maintenance.

Yep I have read that, in hindsight maybe I should have gone for the dry. I think im going to get some degreaser anyway and I can always give it a good bath in that and scrub all the stuff I put on today off. Yeah just got onto CGN, a ton of useful info. Cheers all.

Just another question on this. I assume you mean it won't wash away easy as just make sure I use a good degreaser and really scrub it down to make sure the wet lube is off before I put on another?

Yes, wet lube sticks to the cassette and chain a lot better for riding in the wet but wet lube is why you get that horrible, black shitty stuff that's harder to remove.
