Cycling Advice

i dont cycle as a thing, maybe a few miles here and there on a nice day, but if you're into riding long distances it must be quite hard in the UK? a lot of traffic on the roads. I was seeing my mum the other day and some cyclist was on the floor, all smashed up, some car had come way too close and wobbled her off. Luckily the other car who stopped were first aiders. but these back lanes do seem quite dangerous.

It's crazy to have a car on the road nowadays never mind a bicycle, especially with the Mad Max types and younger end on facebook, much safer on the disused railway tracks etc. The country lanes are full of two abreast cyclist while car's are hurtling about, some people certainly have a Deathwish.

There's been a few bikes stolen in the sale area Walton Park and Priory Park. Kids have apparently been held at knifepoint. I saw a gang at the co op on washway Rd all dressed in black faces totally covered checking out an expensive bike that was locked up there.

I keep getting fizzy fingers when riding.

My handle bars are straight so there no other riding position I can take and after about half an hour i get pins and needles and by the end I can’t feel my hands.

Anyone else have this problem or know how to combat it? I think I need to strengthen my forearms, I also think it’s just positioning of my hands of the handlebars - but what position’s best?

New/better bar tape and/or replace gloves for some with gel padding. It's just a symptom of riding on less than perfect surfaces and unlikely anything to do with riding position.

What kind of bike are you riding? if its a road bike and you can fit a larger tyre then you can run at a lower inflation so if 23mm tyre go to 25mm and 25mm go to 28mm that is if the frame allows of course, apart from that @Stockton Heath Blue covers the other easy fixes

Try giving your arms a shake out every so often. That can help.

Also worth checking that your wrists are in line with your forearms as you grip the brake levers, as it could cause you discomfort if they are not.

In terms of strengthening, core before forearms. Gripping tighter will only make the problem worse. You are aiming to have as light a grip on the bars as possible without being too loose.

Just signed up for the Tour De Manc - Full Manc course, 104 miles and 6,700 ft of climbing covering 10 boroughs of Greater Manchester.

Anyone done it before? What's your opinion?

Fucking nightmare though!! I get it and often have to take one hand off and flex the fingers to get feeling back, not good when you start a tricky descent either.
32.5 miles this morning in exactly 2 hours, got a 10k run planned later as part of my half distance triathlon in September. Hoping on Sunday to go straight from one to the other (brick run).
