Cycling Advice

Bromptons are being heavilly bid on in the secondary market, good little bike but for the same sort of dough i'd favour the german riesse & muller Birdy 21 speed

I'd also swap the straight handlebar on any small wheel bike for some with setback, i think from memory somewhere between 20-25 degrees is the magic number to not be over or under pronating

For the first time in my cycling I have hit a massive wall, having serious neck issues which start at just under my nape and work their way down and I am struggling to keep my head up I also seem to have a huge drop off energy wise whilst this is happening. Neck wise I would think bike fit but my main squeeze at the moment I have had for four years and had the same set up so not sure what’s changed.

All a bit worrying really

I’ve had neck pain in the past and I put it down to pillows

I now sleep on a very flat pillow. The first week of lying on it it felt like there was nothing there and I couldn’t sleep, but I stuck with it and now my lying posture has got used to it I’ll never look back.

That's no good if you'll never look back. It's advisable to look back to check the traffic behind you, especially when you are going to make a turn or approaching a junction. Remember from driving lessons, Mirror. Sigma. Manoeuvre. But look back instead of using the mirror on the bike.

Also just the action of looking back means drivers know that you are aware and can sometimes refrain from dangerous overtaking.

I use to suffer with neck pain than I read an article in cycling weeking regarding neck pain. For me it was a simple fix just wear cycling classes as we use so many neck muscles when squinting our eyes. Which I use to do because of the sunlight or the wind or dirt from the road.

Training for Tour de Manc has started in earnest now. 85 miles from Warrington taking in Artists Lane (Alderley Edge); Brickworks; Long Hill & Goyt Valley route up to the Cat & Fiddle - just under 5,000 ft of climbing. Knackered this morning but it was a stunning ride.

That’s true, glasses a real help. Biggest pain I get now is from sweat in the eyes if it’s a tough ride; stings like hell. The helmet has a fabric strip around the inside, but clearly makes next to no difference.

Sounds good. Did you climb up through Bollington and then up past Jenkins Chapel over the ridge into the Goyt Valley? Did those climbs last week; great stuff to tackle, though I’m not sure I could cope with it as part of 85 miles!
Edit. Just re-read - is Brickworks the one up from Pott Shrigley? Nice climb too, but a bit more gentle!

Yes, Brickworks is Pott Shrigley. Blaze Hill just before is a nice test but would have taken us slightly away from our target destination. Left at the bottom of Brickworks back down to Whaley Bridge for a coffee & teacake then up Long Hill and turn right at the top to go back down to the reservoir rather than down to Buxton.
