Cycling Advice

I think moron season has started early this year.

Yesterday on my ride home from work I was:

  • Close passed by a double-decker bus at less than a handlebars width and the bus was doing at a guess 55-60mph.
  • Some stupid kid just wandered out in front of me from between stationary cars whilst I was doing about 15mph. Hood up, headphones on, never even noticed me as I slammed on and skidded to a stop about 6 inches from him.
  • Had a car door opened on me as I entered a left filter lane (I was signalling and I had my lights on).
  • Had a Deliveroo rider nearly T-Bone me at a junction as I was turning right onto a 1-way street. F*cker was coming up the street the wrong way. Luckily I checked right before I pulled out.
On the plus side my balance is perfect, my bike handling skills are sharp and I've got my emergency stop absolutely nailed.

New bike day for me today.

Just got one of these:

Looks the business to be fair.

What groupset is it running?

(looks like Shimano 105 in the picture)

Its 105 but the hoods (shifters/brakes) are an early iteration of shimano budget hydros. Not as nice looking or shifting as the current ones but braking wise they do the same and that is what i want. I had cable discs for years and am done with them.

Whats the best bike to get. My knees are starting to click a fair bit. I don't want a electric bike just yet. But the bike I have is a city style bike about 20 odd years old always needed a upgrade but never changed it. I don't want the thin racer wheels or a racer in general as the roads here are shit with tram lines popping up on my route to work. A bit of a hill going home all downhill going into work. Also those electric bikes and scooters do my head in. Don't hear the fuckers as they glide by you.

Are the bikes decent in Decathlon? Was looking at a Trek mountain bike second hand which looked good.

As others have said, a hybrid or gravel bike is a good place to start, they’ll be lighter than a mountain bike and also tend to come with easier gearing than road bikes.

Decathlon are a mixed bag. At the bottom of the range you’re looking at junk tbh, but spend a little more and you get some great value at decathlon.

Has the number of absolute bellends on the road started to go up rapidly as we are easing out of lockdown or is it just me?

Only this morning some tw@t decided to do a U-turn right in front of me right next to a NO f*cking U-TURN sign. I pointed it out to the guy and he just raised his palm's and shrugged.

It wouldn't have normally bothered me, but it was on the same stretch of road where I was very close to being wiped out a few months back by a taxi pulling the exact same stunt.
