My work is moving to Chadderton in a few months and was looking into driving lessons and getting a car etc but at the moment just cant afford it !! So next option is cycling to work. Its about 6 miles away and was just wondering if anyone could advise a decent road bike/mountain bike ?? Was looking at around the £500 mark ( as work do a ride to work scheme ) but also noticed their are now a few decent electric bikes ( not the pizza delivery ones ). Has anone got an electric bike and how long would it take to do 6 miles roughly for a slightly overweight, middle aged man ? Looked at the public transport option and it would take around 1 1/2 hours so rules that one out !!

I cycle to work on a run of the mill bike cost me £200 and takes me 25-30 minutes distance is 5 miles

Don't spend more than £400 tops
I live 5.5iles from work it me 20mins am not that fit really just average
However after 3 months my knees are fuked need an operation for cartilage damage
If u go from nothing to 10 , 5 miles plus cycles a week ur body will be fuked it won't be able to cope

Don't spend over £300 mate, you don't need to! Will take half hour for a 6 mile ride I think, knackers you out for the first week but then u get used to it and your sorted!

Got a bike through Cycle to Work scheme back in September. I recommend a Cannondale Quick CX4 Hybrid, which will do you both for roads and cycle trails. You'll be doing six miles in no time soon enough. I lost a stone in 2 weeks. Cost about 500 quid.

I've got a Carerra hybrid subway 1 sat in my shed if anyone's interested. It's in decent nick. Cost me £250. Will take £140 for it. Think it's 20 inch, suspension seat (god send!)

Did cycle to work this time last year. Went cheap: <a class="postlink" href="http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_storeId_10001_catalogId_10151_productId_762067_langId_-1_categoryId_165499#tab3" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stor ... 65499#tab3</a>

My review is the latest one on there. haha.

Cycling to work is cheap as fuck. No more £50 a month on Mega Riders and the like. On the downside, repairs could cost you £80-150 a year I reckon. Knee trouble is common but I've only had it if the seat is too high. Thankfully I only do 3 mile return so not had any issues in the last 5 months.

I'd recommend doing it if your reasonably fit. If you go red and are blowing after a 20 min runabout, I'd say stick to buses. 6 mile is a long way for a overweight newbie and summer will probably kill you.
