D Day anniversary

Absolutely. Whichever way you look a it, the sacrifice, the accomplishment, it's shaped us in every way and given us the right to live our lives. Most of them were just kids, many never had the chance to love, never hugged their mum or dad again once they left home.

If anyone doesn't understand the occasion, I'd urge them to just look up on YouTube for D Day memories (there are at least couple of channels who have been busy recording veterans memories before it's too late) and listen to a few. It was war, it was horrific, and they did it for each and every one of us.

This should be the top thread of the day. All day

Its fuckin unfathomable, my brain is a billion miles away, from having even a microscopic understanding of what that day must have been like.
Just listening to a podcast. Many of the first landings were by squadrons who had yet to see any sort of action. This was their first experience of war. Sent in to soften up the defences for the second wave of highly trained commandos.

The young lads were told on the boats on the way to expect hell and that 3 out of 4 wouldnt come back.
How do you cope with that? Lots didnt and froze and were just shot to pieces.

The pod also touched on the german defences, alot were also untrained kids. From as far away as mongolia!!! With no idea why they were there.

Incredible to think its within living memory.

If you cant put aside all the ‘shit’ thats going on with city for one day and actually think about things that matter i dont know what to say. Ive certainly give my head a wobble

You wouldn't see this generation of youth rushing to the home office to sign up.
Please don't use a commemoration of an earlier generation to belittle a new generation. None of us really know how anyone would respond in similar circumstances - but history tells us that when required young people have stepped up. It also tells us that new wars happen because a new generation wants to show that they are just as tough and warrior like as an earlier generation - belittling adds to that motivation and I don't want other generations to be faced with making the decisions that were made in 1944.

Those who were there need to be remembered well - whether they chose to be or not. We need to listen to their stories and hear the trauma that they went through, because you are right they are heroes. And I know that what happened then - meant that I was never faced with having to be a soldier.

Correct. That was a needless comment.

That generation werent rushing to sign up either and a report (no idea how it was conducted or calculated) at the time said 98% of soldiers DID NOT want to be there.

Who the fuck knows who would sign up for what in this day n age , we cant fathom what the nation was faced with rhen. I think we would be surprised what todays generation would be up for if faced with the same today
