Alffie have yet to go over to Cheltenham. March meeting is just mental one of my brothers done it before and said even getting a hotel or b&b is mad you are best of booking it before Xmas. The atmosphere is brilliant but its yammers for the 4 days. I have done Leopardstown over here for the Xmas festival and its mental for Boxing day but the other days are more easier.

Save your money and stay at home and use it to bet on the horses, it is so expensive and packed to the rafters you will end up watching it on a big screen or a tv in a bar inside the course anyways lol

Have you seen the betting ring, blimey you can barely move to get a bet on.

When at the races I like to go up and down looking for a bit of value but at these big tracks you end up just betting with the nearest bookie you can get too.

If you are dead set on going it seems there is a train to Cheltenham from Manchester.

On this site somebody asks a similar question but for a christening and there is a couple of links to train companies.

doesn't sound much fun that, ill take the advice and use the money i would of spend and bet with it.

Cheltenham is one of the great sporting events, if you have never been and like your NH racing you have to go... I go every year to the first day - although i am going to the gold cup day as well this year. The first day its busy but its nothing like described, you can get a pint ok (as long as you like guinness) get your bets on no problem and still get back to the course to watch (most people i know punt online but we all have a bet on course for at least one race) i have only missed 1 race in the last 5 or 6 years, and that was because i chose to stay in the bar as i was a bit drunk...

Gold cup day is the day you cant move as much, but there are 30,000 less the first 3 days... the roar when the supreme novice goes off is something to behold - i would never say dont go... those that tell you not to - dont go themselves...

Booking a hotel or B&B is an issue as i know of quite a few that book for the following year, when they check out. I am lucky that we have a driver in our group that doesnt drink so he is happy to take us all...

Tbf I did say I didnt go and it would be best to get a 2nd opinion, I like Cheltenham for the betting and the quality of the races that are run, also I would rather use the money it would cost to get in, eat and drink for the day and the price of b&b/hotel and put it on the horses.

You are correct that the roar of the crowd when they go off for the Supreme novices must be special to hear live as it sounds fantastic on the TV.

I do go to racing but just prefer smaller crowds, to do what I want, when I want without having to batter my way through 1000's of likeminded people.

I would recomend a night at the dogs to anybody also, a great night of fast actioned fun.

Alright lads, thinking of going to Cheltenham festival whats the best way to get there? there is no national express from manchester which is a shame. any advice?

I go every year, it is undoubtedly the best week of my year.

The highlight is the people. I love going racing, but Cheltenham is the only place I've ever been where racing is the first thing on the mind of everyone who is there. There's a quote that says "Cheltenham is about celebrating the joy of racing then the joy of life, Aintree is the other way around." I think that's fair. Unsurprisingly, the midweek slot means there are no hen/stag parties, people have taken time off to be there, and the sense of occasion is not lost. I've never seen any bother there, strangers chatting away with each other and enjoying themselves. Not to sound odd, but it's like something from times past.

Tuesday is undoubtedly my favourite day. Getting a drink, getting a bet on and watching the racing is easy. Wednesday/Thursday have similar crowds, but Tuesday edges it because of the card, Friday is rammed though, and it can be frustrating if you're in a rush.

There are direct trains, though you need to book at the right time to get a decent price. Trains run til late at night, so you can make a proper day of it if you wish. One sneaky thing is getting a ticket from Manchester to Birmingham and another from Birmingham to Cheltenham, which sometimes works out cheaper than MCR>CNM, even though it's often the same train.

Accommodation prices are ridiculous, and you'd be lucky to get anything now. If it's of any use, I stay in Birmingham and commute down every day (about 45min on the train, for about £19rtn if memory serves). We do this because we tend to spend the evenings in the casino, and there's loads of places within walking distance of New Street.

PM me if you want more details blue.

EDIT: FORGOT TO ADD, you also get to laugh at Derek Thompson.

It seems we have a very similar outlook to Cheltenham... I love Tuesday at Cheltenham and this year its going to be one of the best days racing of the season... SNH special as its first and obviously the Champion hurdle but the Arkle is going to be one of the races of the meeting IMO...
