Sounds obvious, but take plenty of cash. Cashpoints all over York will have queues on raceday. That said, try to think how much you want to spend on each race and stick to it. If you get an early winner, it's very easy to think about having more on the next race. My advice is don't.

Have a top day, there's nothing quite like the women of the knavesmire when the sun is shining.
I tend to do a tenner per race. If I get a winner in the first, I'll put £20 on the next. If that loses, I drop back to a tenner. If the second wins, I stick to £20 until the next loser. Always £50 on the lucky last race! So seven race card, I make sure I have £110 (6 races x £10 + 1 race x £50) to gamble plus whatever I need for food, drink, transport.

I'm sure others will be more careful/extravagant.

Also, if you are betting with the on-course bookmakers rather than the Tote, don't pile in straight away and have a look at all the boards for the best price for your horse. That will also give you an opportunity to see what horses are being backed (sometimes an indicator, often a complete waste of time).

Finally, check the form, the breeding, the trainer, the jockey, the going, the distance and the weights... then pick a horse with a nice name that is wearing pretty colours ;-)

Above all, enjoy it. Racing is a cracking day out.

As the lads have said set a limit and dont go over it. The horse racing is a great day out for all the family now and you will enjoy the day no matter what. What I tend to do is put whatever winnings i have somewhere were i wont touch it and stay using the money I went with. So thats either for me putting the winnings in my inside pocket or on summer days my sock. Might look strange but if you have a good win you dont want to give it back to them. Or if your brave enough put the winnings in your other halfs purse or handbag and make sure to take it all back at the end of the day. Sadly this option it comes with the pearls of how much did you win and your winnings could be hit as she knows what you won. So the sock 1 is the best way out of it if you dont want to take the hit.

As for horses to back leave it until the day. Print your racecards off Attheraces.com. They will give you there idea of the 1s to follow on the day. So that might be a good thing. Have some drinks but dont be 1 of those twats trying to get on tv that does my fucking head right in. Also if your other half is going for your benefit make sure she wears flat shoes idealy or a small heel as you dont want her moaning about her fucking feet in shoes were she cant walk in. So tell her that flat shoes or if she wears high heels you dont want her moaning.

Also you will have a great day out. I think a lot of places are putting on music after the races in the summer time so it might be a gig after it as well. Anyway you will enjoy it.

Thats great, thanks for the steer lads. Just to conclude then the advice is to take a set amount of money with me at the start of the day. Spread my bets across all of the races, dont chase any losses, bet on horses where the jockey is wearing blue and most importantly of all dont trust the missus with any winnings. I'm sure I can manage all that.

Trade Commissioner wins nicely. Will improve massively for that. Was cruising with 2f to go and had to sprint home. If they went a good pace i could have seen him winning that even better. Interesting to see where they go with him but surely he'll head for the big handicaps. John Smiths Cup could be an option.

Ryan Moore is the most over rated jockey going, why possibly the best trainer in the game has him as his stable jockey il never know

Wont be going near Stoutes horses for a while. They've been running badly for around a year now and his strike rate this season is shocking. People will criticise Moore but he cant help it if the horses arent 100% which they obviously arent. Can understand him having a few losers but he's had nothing this season thats made you go, yeah that could be useful.

If Art Dzeko is heavily backed tomorrow, the gamblers amongst you might wanna lay him a bit.

Has a really high knee action and on this ground my money would be on Our Boy Jack. He hasn't lived up to the hype, but is good enough to take this if Art D doesn't take to firmer ground.

Forecast for me I think.
