I have heard on good authority that Cann was appointed as Steve Coppell had alternative plans as did Eric Young.
This is genius. :-) LOLWho can play for Palace
Fail to make the grade
Then become a lino
Get selected for their game

No one's suggesting he's a bad assistant but it's not like there are no others who could do it so why pick one where there's a potential conflict of interest, particularly one which is already known about and has been acted on previously?Just had a look at who he is, got this of wiki, and if true he is at the top of the tree in linesman.

World cup finals, CL finals, FA Cups etc.I'd imagine if he has been doing world cup finals and champs league finals, he won't be too arsed about playing youth football for Palace 30 years ago. He's from Norwich, started playing youth team football at Norwich. He must be one of the best liners there is to get all those jobs so probably not a bad appointment.

I guess it could work both ways, might feel he has something to prove to show he isnt in anyway considered biased towards Palace. Hopefully being one of the best linesman in english football (i know that probably doesnt say a great deal considering what we see on a weekly basis) means he might be less prone to utter incompetence. I worry far more about what they blatantly get wrong on a weekly basis than who he played youth team football for in the 80's.No one's suggesting he's a bad assistant but it's not like there are no others who could do it so why pick one where there's a potential conflict of interest, particularly one which is already known about and has been acted on previously?

I wonder what the rules are in terms of appointing assistants? From googling him, he lives in Norwich so im guessing the whole 'area you live in' rule won't apply. Not like many liners and refs have much of a footballing background.I agree. You couldn't ask for a more qualified AR who has achieved everything there is to achieve in the game. I've no doubt that he will put in a performance to the best of his ability, but I've also no doubt that he'll get the odd decision wrong, as in most games.
So why run the risk of questioning his integrity / the FA's integrity when all it'll take to avoid it is swapping him for another AR.
And if palace end up getting done as a result?I guess it could work both ways, might feel he has something to prove to show he isnt in anyway considered biased towards Palace.
You're probably all right, no point even questioning any conflict of interest. Now we probably get screwed by just pure incompetance. He's gone apparently. FA have suddenly "remembered" he was once a Palace player.
I shouldnt be so naive after that **** Anthony Taylors performance earlier this season.Should never have been appointed in the first place, well done to everyone involved with ****watch.
