I think claims about him being an ego maniac are a bit of a circular argument. I think any human being would struggle to deal with that level of fame and influence without it impacting negatively upon their character. If you're hardly ever told 'no', you must start to believe the world revolves principally around you.
My issue with Beckham is that he has achieved those levels of fame in the first place. He has always struck me as a completely vacuous, uninteresting, anodyne man. I would also say he is approaching being a moron on the Binet scale. I doubt he has had a worthwhile independent thought in his life. What you see and what you hear are merely creations in the minds of others.
To me, it is remarkable that such an unremarkable man has achieved such a station in life.
