David James or Shay Given?

James for me, but I do love Shay as well.

A combination of the two, James' shot stopping and height, with Given's concentration levels and authority, would be immense.

I prefere given... remember last season, pompy at home, distan and james did a little bit of "oh no, after you sir" and in popped benji?

As an Irishman, Ive been watching Shay for years. He's a fantastic shot stopper who communicates well with his defence, but as one poster has already mentioned, he simply never leaves his line for crosses and corners.

Everytime we concede a corner Im nervous. DJ was never afraid to show his authority and claim crosses. He never made any mistakes while with us. However, he seems to have had quite a poor season this year so Given shades it for me.

Exactly. He's one of the best in the world at digging his defenders out of the shit with incredible point-blank reflex saves, but there is a crucial aspect missing from his game, and that is the ability to command his box. Sometimes, he is only forced to make those saves because he didn't come to claim the ball in the first place.

In some games, he manages to stop 4 or 5 certain goals, but the opposition will always find a way through eventually if you keep letting them get to the ball first from crosses. There are only so many times he can't make incredible super-human saves. This used to happen over and over again at Newcastle, and has worryingly repeated itself on a few occasions at City. Obviously the centre-halves have to take some responsibility too.

He's a very, very good keeper, and I like him a lot, but he will never be one of the greats.

If Shay was English i am 99% sure he would be Englands #1 and not James.
I'd agree with that because with England, he'd have top-notch centre-halves in front of him who would do the business at corners/crosses.
